'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Star, Sean Calls 'Steven-Taylor' Almost Kiss 'Stressful', 'It's Hard..'

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a television series which was first released on June 17, 2022, on Amazon Prime Video. The show is based on the novel trilogy by Jenny Han, The Summer I Turned Pretty. The second season of the show premiered on July 14, 2023, and it was in August 2023 when the makers confirmed the show would return for its third and final season. 

After two years of anticipation, The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 was finally released, and in a blink, we are already on Episode 7. Now, reflecting on some of the most difficult situations he has faced, Sean Kaufman has shed some light on the love triangle of the season.

Sean Kaufman recently opened up about his character 'Steven's' unexpected love triangle in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3. The show, while focused on 'Conrad-Belly-Jeremiah's' drama, Sean revealed that he never expected things to get so complicated for his own character. He shared that he never anticipated his own character would find himself at the centre of such an emotional storyline. For the unversed, the new season brings unexpected struggles for 'Steven' as he attempts to process his feelings for 'Taylor' (Rain Spencer) and 'Denise' (Isabella Briggs).

In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, Sean Kaufman revealed that he had no idea the script would take such a dramatic turn. 'Steven', with both 'Denise' and 'Taylor', in the same scene, further added layers to The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3. However, the experience is turning out to be extremely stressful for the actor himself. He was quoted as saying:

"When we started season 3, we weren’t given all the scripts, so to go episode by episode and see the love triangle start to form was very interesting and fun. It’s the first time you see the dynamic between the three of them, as opposed to just separately. It was a lot of fun to shoot. I love Rain and I love Bella so much. They’re amazing, and getting to work with them was fantastic."

Sean Kaufman on 'Steven's' relationship with 'Taylor' and 'Denise'

Sean Kaunfman admitted that he now has more empathy for the show's central love triangle. He revealed that at first he didn't understand what the world of 'Conrad', 'Belly', and 'Jeremiah' was like, but now he has a better insight into it. He revealed that 'Steven's' love triangle is extremely stressful and noted that each of them brings their own unique qualities. He added that 'Taylor' was 'Steven's' first love, and it was difficult to break away from something like that.

On the other hand, he praised 'Denise' for pushing his character in new ways. He shared that she supports 'Steven', wants to go into this business with him, and sees him for who he is, 'as a brain'. Sean also reflected on how, unlike the intensity of 'Steven' and 'Taylor', his connection with 'Denise' feels calmer and free of unnecessary drama. However, who he will choose will only be revealed in future episodes.
