The deeply unsettling case of Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder at his honeymoon keeps getting twisted with chilling new findings. Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was found to be the prime suspect of the murder who planned the whole thing with her young lover and co-conspirator, Raj Kushwaha, and three other contract killers. Amid the ongoing investigations, new reports reveal that Sonam was not only present at the scene to witness the murder, but she also had a backup plan to take the matter into her own hands in case the hired killers failed.
According to the sources of India Today, Sonam Raghuvanshi was so set on killing Raja that she was prepared to step in and kill him if the hired killers failed. As per investigators, Sonam allegedly told her suspected lover and co-conspirator Raj Kushwaha that if the three hired men couldn’t complete the task, she would personally push Raja off a cliff in Shillong while pretending to take a selfie to make it look like a tragic accident.
The sources also revealed that Sonam started planning the murder barely four days after her wedding with Raja, when she returned to her maternal home in Indore on May 15, 2025. Thereon, she started spinning the sinister plot over phone calls with her lover, 21-year-old Raj. Reports state that Sonam was deliberately delaying intimacy with Raja till their honeymoon, insisting that they first visit the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. This was all a ruse to buy more time for the killers to reach Meghalaya.
According to police sources, Raja and Sonam checked out of a homestay in Nongriat village, Meghalaya, on May 23, 2025, after which they went missing. Ten days later, on June 2, 2025, Raja’s body was discovered nearly 20 km away at the bottom of a deep gorge near the Weisawdong waterfalls. The autopsy report confirmed that Raja suffered two sharp blows to the head, one from the front and another from behind, indicating brutal assault. East Khasi Hills SP, Vivek Syiem, said:
"The autopsy report indicated there were two sharp cuts on the head of the deceased — one from behind and one from the front.”
After a thorough investigation, the Meghalaya Police have arrested all four accused in the murder of 29-year-old businessman, Raja Raghuvanshi. The accused include Sonam’s alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and his friends, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi, all of whom were suspected of executing the murder.

Investigators suggest that Raja’s murder was a carefully layered plot with backup plans in place, given that any part of the original conspiracy didn’t work out. Raja’s wife, Sonam, the brain behind this horrific tragedy, was missing from the scene, and after a relentless search, she was found and arrested from a dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Even though she initially confessed to plotting the murder, Sonam later claimed innocence, alleging she was abducted and had no involvement in the crime. However, she later broke down and confessed to the murder.
Meanwhile, Raja's brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, has made serious claims, alleging that Sonam herself was among those who physically assaulted the victim before killing him.
