One such popular actor, whose death shocked everyone and garnered the spotlight for many years, is Kunal Singh, who was a popular name in the late 90s and early 2000s. Kunal Singh made his blockbuster debut opposite Sonali Bendre

Born in Haryana to Col Rajendra Singh, Kunal predominantly worked in Tamil cinema. In 1999, Kunal made his acting debut in the romantic film, Kadhalar Dhinam, opposite Sonali Bendre. Because of its popularity in Tamil, the film was reshot but mostly dubbed in Hindi with the title, Dil Hi Dil Mein. The song from the movie, Ae Nazneen Suno Na, is still considered cult.

After his debut film, Kunal appeared in many Tamil films like Paarvai Ondre Pothume and Punnagai Desam. However, after initial hits, Kunal’s movies stopped working at the box office. Several of his films were also shelved, and some were shot but remained unreleased. When Kunal stopped getting good roles, he turned into an assistant editor and also ventured into producing films.

Kunal Singh’s unhappy marriage

Kunal Singh was married to a woman named Anuradha and the couple were parents to two daughters. However, multiple reports suggested that Anuradha and Kunal had an unhappy marriage as she was suspicious about his closeness with his co-star, Lavina Bhatia. As a result, Anuradha left him and stayed at her parents’ house in Ahmednagar with their kids.

Kunal Singh's mysterious death

On February 7, 2008, Kunal was found hanging from the ceiling of his Mumbai residence, by actress Lavina Bhatia. The actor, who was working on a Hindi film, Yogi, had a meeting with the team and Lavina hours before his death. After Kunal’s death, Lavina was detained by the Police as she was with him at his home during the time of his death.

In her Police statement, Lavina said she went to the restroom for 10 minutes, and when she returned, she found him hanging from the ceiling. Since there was no evidence against Lavina, she was released from the Police custody after months. The Police didn't find any foul play in the case and dismissed it as suicide. As per the police, Kunal was a black belt in karate, so he was capable of defending himself from any attack. Not only this, the actor had previously tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrist.

Kunal Singh’s death was challenged by his father, and the case was reopened

Kunal Singh’s case was re-opened when his father, Col Rajendra Singh claimed foul play in his death. As per Rajendra Singh, when he reclaimed Kunal’s body from the hospital, it had cuts and bruises. He claimed that Kunal was first murdered and later hung to make it look like suicide. In his statement, Rajendra Singh said:

“The injury on his right arm suggested that someone was holding him from the back. Also, there were strangulation marks on the neck. It was below where it should have been if he had hanged himself. It seemed like he had been hanged after being strangulated. Moreover, he was found hanging with one of his legs on the sofa and the other one on a suitcase, which was unbelievable.”

Kunal Singh’s father pointed out many loopholes in the case

In her police complaint, Lavina stated that she was in the bathroom, and when she came out 10 minutes later, she found Kunal dead. As per Kunal’s father, how could his son commit suicide when there is someone else present in the flat? Kunal’s father, Rajendra also stated how would Kunal know how much time Lavina would take in the washroom.

Col Singh also stated that the Police declared the case as suicide within 45 minutes and ruled out many factors. He also stated that Kunal texted music director, Dabu Mallik an hour before his death and invited him to his home. The case was handed over to CBI, who examined it from all possible angles, stated it to be suicide and ruled out any foul play.

Kunal Singh’s case has striking similarities to the death of actor, Sushant Singh Rajput

Cut to June 14, 2020, and a heart-wrenching death of another talented actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, shocked the nation. The actor was found hanging from the ceiling of his Mumbai home. His untimely death opened the ugly side of Bollywood and drugs. His ex-girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty’s name too cropped up. Sushant’s father, Krishna Kishore Singh, filed an FIR against Rhea and the actress was arrested after months of trial.

The case was handed over to the CBI, and after years, the CBI filed a closure report, concluding it as a suicide and ruling out any foul play. Rhea was also given a clean chit in the case. In many ways, Kunal Singh and Sushant Singh Rajput’s cases have striking similarities.

Both Kunal Singh and Sushant Singh Rajput died under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind many unanswered questions. Their fans still seek justice for them.
