Thudarum Crosses Rs. 100 Cr, Shobana On Mohanlal's Habit While Hugging Her During Emotional Scenes

Malayalam film industry’s popular jodi, Mohanlal and Shobana’s comeback film, Thudarum crossed Rs. 100 crore mark in just 18 days of its release. On the global stage, the film crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark, becoming the top-grossing Malayalam film in Kerala. Ever since its release, the film gained much anticipation as Shobana and Mohanlal reunited for the silver screen after 15 years.

Mohanlal and Shobana’s pairing is considered iconic, and it goes back to the 80s. The duo is loved for their effortless chemistry and on-screen charm. They starred together in over 50 films together and even after four decades, their-on-screen chemistry is flawless. The lethal combination of Lal and Shobana began in 1985 with the film, Avidathepole Ivideyum, and since then, there have been back-to-back hits.

With films like Nadodikaattu, Vellanakalude Nadu, Thenmavin Kombathu, Ulladakkam, Pavithram, Pakshe, Minnaram, Maya Mayooham, and many more, Shobana and Mohanlal created pure magic. In more than 40 years and 55 films, the duo still makes hearts flutter. The camaraderie they share is such that Shobana once talked about Mohanlal’s old habit while hugging her.

Shobana revealed Mohanlal’s old habit of hugging her during emotional scenes

During a throwback interview with a leading Tamil TV channel, Shobana talked about Mohanlal, whom she lovingly calls ‘Lalu’. She revealed his peculiar habit while hugging her during emotional scenes and stated:

“While acting in emotional scenes involving the two of us, I'll hug Lalu after using glycerine on my eyes. As we shoot the scene, the glycerine will fall on Lalu's clothes. He would then jokingly warn me not to put my mucus on his clothes. Even if I say it's glycerine and not mucus, he will again say the same.”

Shobana called Mohanlal her favourite co-star

Shobana and Mohanlal are not just co-stars but also share a great friendship. The duo has been friends for more than 40 years and have often spoken highly of each other. Once, when Shobana was asked to name her favourite co-star, without a moment of thought, she took Mohanlal’s name and revealed her appreciation towards him.

Do you know Jyothika was the first choice to play Shobana’s role in ‘Thudarum’

Mohanlal and Shobana reunited after 15 long years for Thudarum. But do you know, Shobana was not the first choice for the role, but before her, Tamil actress, Jyothika was approached for the role. Talking about the same with Red FM, Thudarum’s director, Tharun Moorthy said:

“Shobana was always on our mind for Lalitha. But we weren’t sure how to get in touch with her. So we began exploring alternatives. We were looking for someone who hadn’t acted with Mohanlal before. That’s when we thought of Jyothika. Jyothika and Suriya were very excited when I narrated the story, but her dates clashed with a planned family world tour.”

Since Jyothika backed out, Tharun thought to go with Shobana as the Malayali audience would love to see the cult pair of Mohanlal and Shobana together. The duo was last seen together in the 2004 film, Mambazhakkalam. Talking about Shoban’s reaction to her casting in Thudarum, Tharun said:

“That question kept lingering in my mind: Wouldn’t Mohanlal and Shobana be the combination that Malayali viewers want to watch? We decided to contact Shobana, and she was also interested in coming back to movies. She said if the script and space were right, and if I made her feel comfortable, then she would do the film.”
