Shaun White And Nina Dobrev's Relationship Timeline, First Met At A Workshop, Dated For Five Years

Shaun White is one of the most renowned former professional snowboarders and skateboarders. Rising to fame after participating in several competitions, he is best known for being a five-time Olympian and three-time Olympic gold medalist when it came to the sport of half-pipe snowboarding. He has won several awards throughout his career, including 10 ESPY Awards across various categories. Additionally, Shaun White holds a world record for winning the highest number of X Games gold medals and Olympic gold medals by a snowboarder. It was during the 2022 Winter Olympics that Shaun White shocked fans by announcing that it would not only be his last Olympics but his final competition altogether.  

Despite this, even today, Shaun stands as an elite in the snowboarding world. Now, as the countdown for the 2026 Winter Olympics has begun, Shaun is all set to appear as an expert commentator for NBC Sports. Well, he is an expert for sure, as on Sunday, January 25, 2026, he pulled an impressive stunt in the snowy conditions of New York City's Central Park. In the video he posted to Instagram, Shaun was joined by comedians, Shane Gillis and Chris O' Connor, over whom he jumped and made an almost 360-degree turn midair. As his move continues to garner massive attention, Shaun's past relationship with actress, Nina Dobrev has also been on people's minds. Shaun White and Nina Dobrev met for the first time at a workshop  

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev's first meeting took place at a workshop which was reportedly organised by motivational speaker, Tony Robbins. Held in Florida at the end of 2019, after Sean and Nina were done with their speaking engagements, they went out to grab dinner together at a nearby restaurant. Interestingly, Shaun later admitted in an interview that he "actually didn't know anything about her." He recalled how at the time some members of the restaurant's staff approached them while they were eating. Naturally, being a famous athlete and an Olympic gold medalist, Shaun assumed that they perhaps wanted to click a picture with him. To his surprise, however, when they came over, they actually wanted to get a photo with Nina, the Vampire Diaries alum. Claiming that the entire incident was really funny, Shaun remembered thinking, “What's happening? What's going on?”

A few months after their first meeting in late February 2020, Shaun White and Nina Dobrev were seen posting pictures from the same location. According to reports, they were enjoying a South African safari together from which they posted the separate photos. However, internet sleuths were quick to catch on to this fact, realising that Shaun and Nina were in the same location for an entire week. After the truth came out, it was revealed that Shaun was visiting Nina on her filming location for the movie, Redeeming Love. Irrespective of this, their romance rumours didn't begin until March 2020, that is, the early days of quarantine, when they were captured riding their bicycles together in Malibu. According to reports, during their leisurely ride, Shaun could be seen holding onto Nina's dog, Maverick, further highlighting the close nature of their relationship.

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev went Instagram official most unexpectedly on April 18, 2020. Instead of posting a typical loved-up photo of themselves, Nina posted a hilarious video where she could be seen attempting to wash her groceries. In the background, however, eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed the hands of Shaun White after his tattoo and freckles gave his identity away.

In February 2021, the month of love, Shaun White and Nina Dobrev went out on a date. What made it more special is that they were joined by Nina's former Vampire Diaries co-star, Paul Wesley and his wife, Ines de Ramon. According to reports, their double date took place at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming. Nina posted a picture from their date on her official Instagram account, captioning it as “Sometimes you gotta double down,” and calling the foursome “power pals.”

2022 marked Shaun White's final Olympic run as well as his last competition overall. In the halfpipe that season, Shaun took fourth position. Celebrating the same, Shaun's girlfriend, Nina Dobrev, called him the “G.O.A.T. of snowboarding,” and “the G.(B).O.A.T. - Greatest Boyfriend Of All Time.” A month after Shaun's retirement, Nina threw him a party to celebrate his storied career. From the party pictures, guests could be seen donning red wigs, a nod to Shaun's signature red hair colour.  

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev announced their engagement in 2024 

After going strong for a few years, on October 30, 2024, Shaun White finally got down on one knee to Nina Dobrev, sharing pictures from the proposal on Instagram. The photos show him popping the question to his girlfriend in a room full of white roses and candles. He captioned the post, “She said yes,” followed by a ring and infinity emoji. The couple later revealed more details from the proposal in an interview with Vogue. They said it happened in New York City, while Nina was under the impression she was going to dinner with former Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, only to find Paul waiting for her with a ring at the Golden Swan restaurant.  

Sadly, one year after their engagement, Shaun White and Nina Dobrev mutually decided to call it quits in September 2025.
