In 2018, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's daughter, Janhvi Kapoor had stepped into Bollywood and had begun her journey of acting with the film, Dhadak. In no time, Janhvi became the Dhadak of the nation and the fans wanted to know when will her little sister, Khushi Kapoor join the industry. After Janhvi and before Khushi, it was their cousin, Shanaya Kapoor, daughter of Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor, who had begun her career in the Hindi film industry. But not how you think! Shanaya Kapoor didn’t step into Bollywood as an actress, but an assistant director to Sharan Sharma. Shanaya has assisted Sharan in the film, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl starring her cousin sister, Janhvi Kapoor. Wishing her luck when she had begun her journey as an assistant director, Shanaya's proud parents, Maheep Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor had written, "My baby’s gone to Lucknow for 2 weeks #MissYouAlready #AssistantDirectorsLife #LoveYou @shanayakapoor02 #ProudMama" and "All the best Shanaya #newbeginnings #newjourney."
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl released on Netflix on August 12, 2020, and has received warm reviews. To mark the success of the film and the beginning of their daughter's journey in Bollywood, Maheep Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor posted heartfelt notes for Shanaya Kapoor on their respective IG feeds. Maheep posted some pictures from the sets of the film and wrote, "Learning the ropes #SweetestTeamEver #AssistantDirector #KargilGirl." Sanjay proudly captioned his post as "I am so glad that Shanaya started her journey in this beautiful world of movies as an assistant director with you @sharansharma, You are an Extremely talented director and A super human being too, loved #gunjansaxena, looking forward to your next!"

A few months back, Sanjay Kapoor had posted an adorable throwback picture of the sister squad of the Kapoor clan. Sanjay along with Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor and Shanaya Kapoor could be seen cutting a cake as his wife, Maheep Kapoor stood by their side. The little sisters had their eyes stuck on their delicious chocolate cake and while Maheep was all hearts for the picture, Shanaya had commented on it, "@khushi05k ur ready to dive into the cake". To which, Sanjay had reacted with laughing emojis and Khushi had replied with heart emoticons. On November 2, 2019, when Shanaya Kapoor had turned 20, her parents, Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor, cousins, Arjun Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor, and BFF, Ananya Panday had graced her 20th birthday bash. Though her cousin, Janhvi Kapoor had missed the celebrations, she hadn’t forgotten to shower love on her sister on this special day. Sharing a collage of unseen pictures with the birthday girl, Janhvi had written, “I Love You @shanayakapoor02” atop her Insta story.
In an interview with the PTI, Sanjay Kapoor had expressed his excitement for his daughter, Shanaya Kapoor, taking baby steps into the film industry. Shanaya had embarked on her professional journey and speaking about the same, her proud father had remarked, "She is learning the ropes. She is taking her acting, dance and diction classes. In our family, she has watched me, her uncle and cousins closely. She knows hard work matters. You can be anybody's daughter or niece but it is going to be your dedication that will take you ahead."
In 2019, Shanaya Kapoor had made her first appearance as a debutante at the Le Bal, which is a concept of a debutante ball that's culturally linked to the 18th century English tradition, whereby young ladies were introduced to society in front of the queen. Shanaya had opted for a red ruffled gown designed by French-Indian couture label, Lecoanet Hemant, paired with an easy, side-swept do. Speaking about dancing with her father, Sanjay Kapoor at the event, Shanaya Kapoor in an interview with Vogue, had said, “We have not practised at all! I think dad is more nervous than me!” Sanjay had also expressed, “It felt great. was nervous, now I’m relaxed the dance is over! It’s not just been a great experience for Shanaya, but something new for me too. I was very proud."
