SC Issues Notice Against Mohammed Shami After Ex-Wife's Demand For Increase Of Rs. 4L Alimony

Indian cricketer, Mohammed Shami, is well known for his bowling skills on the field. However, his personal life is not as sorted as his celebrated professional career. For the unversed, the Indian cricketer has been fighting a legal battle with his ex-wife, Hasin Jahan. The couple shares a daughter together. Now, the Supreme Court has issued notice to cricketer, Mohammed Shami, and the West Bengal government, after his ex-wife, Hasin, approached the SC and demanded an increase in monthly maintenance.

Mohammed Shami's ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, demands an increase in Rs. 4 lakh alimony

For the unversed, earlier this year in 2025, the Calcutta High Court had announced that the Indian cricketer, must pay Rs. 1.5 lakh to his ex-wife, Hasin and pay Rs. 2.5 lakh to their daughter. This brought the total to Rs. 4 lakh that Mohammed Shami had to pay every month. But now Hasin has approached the Apex court and has demanded an increase in monthly maintenance. According to Hasin's plea, the amount fixed by the Calcutta High Court is inadequate considering the cricketer's earnings and lifestyle.

Supreme Court issues notice to Mohammed Shami and the WB government

Initially, during the hearing, SC questioned Mohammed Shami’s ex-wife, Hasin, and said, "Isn't Rs 4 lakh per month already a lot of money?" Later, the court issued notice to the Indian cricketer and the WB government. They must respond within four weeks, and the next hearing will be held in December 2025.

Hasin Jahan seeks higher monthly maintenance for their daughter

Hasin Jahan’s lawyer told the Apex Court that the Indian cricketer earns much more than what is shown in the current maintenance order. The lawyer claimed that Mohammed Shami owns properties worth hundreds of crores, drives luxury cars, travels abroad frequently, and lives a lavish life. Jahan’s lawyer argued that, given his higher income, the maintenance amount should be higher.

The petition also claimed that the Indian cricketer had not paid the maintenance money for several months, even though both the family court and the Calcutta High Court had ordered him to do so. According to Hasin Jahan’s plea, she is demanding higher maintenance for their daughter. She didn’t claim a personal right on her ex-husband, Shami’s income, but it is their daughter who should be entitled to a standard of living similar to her dad. An excerpt of Hasin’s plea can be read as:

"The daughter has the right to study in similar schools, interact with the children of his peers, and live with dignity."

Mohammed Shami calls his marriage to Hasin Jahan the 'biggest mistake' of his life

Recently, the Indian cricketer appeared on the popular show, Aap ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, and opened up about his troubled marriage with Hasin Jahan. He called his marriage with Hasin the “biggest mistake” of his life and shared about how the long legal battle with her deeply affected him. For the unversed, Shami tied the knot with Hasin in 2014 and separated from her in 2018. He was quoted as saying:

"Life teaches you many things. I admit it was the biggest mistake of my life. I don’t blame anybody; it was my fate."
