Ruby Rose Blames 'Cretin' Sydney Sweeney For 'Christy's' Poor Box Office Opening, 'You Ruined The..'

Ruby Rose is an Australian actress and model who rose to fame for her role in season three of Orange is the New Black and her role as 'Kate Kane/ Batwoman' in the Arrowverse television franchise. However, this time it's not her work that has garnered attention, but rather her comment on another actress' project that has left the internet abuzz.

Ruby Rose claims Sydney Sweeney's acting is the reason behind Christy's failure at the box office

According to Box Office Mojo, the sports biopic, in which the Euphoria star plays the trailblazing professional boxer Christy Martin, debuted to USD 1.3 million after its November 7, 2025, release. 

For films opening in more than 2,000 theaters, it ranks No. 12 on the worst wide openings list; excluding rereleases, it ranks No. 9. Ruby Rose explained why the film had such a bad opening despite its impeccable story. The actress took to her Threads account and posted a lengthy message saying the original script for the film was incredible. She stated:

"The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life-changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time."

She further condemned Sweeney's comments following the low box-office news. For the unversed, Sydney Sweeney reflected on how "proud" she was to tell Christy Martin's story, adding that, "we don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life."

However, Ruby wasn't buying any of it and slammed Sydney, calling it her 'cretin' self that ruined the film. For the unversed, Ruby was referring to the news that Sydney was registered as a Republican voter in Florida months before President Donald Trump won a second White House term. She was quoted as saying:

"For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people.' None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period," Rose concluded. "Christy deserved better."

While Ruby Rose is livid over Sydney Sweeney playing the lesbian boxer, Christy Martin herself has applauded the actress for portraying her in the biopic. She addressed Sydney playing her in the film and stated that she is a very 'shy and reserved' person in real life, which is a total contrast to her image in the boxing world, where she wants to knock everyone out. She added:

"I am actually very shy, very reserved, and want to help everyone that I possibly can. In the boxing world, I wanted to knock everybody out. So I have those two parts of my personality, and I also think that's why Sydney Sweeney is doing such an awesome job because she got to be this totally different person that none of you expected."
