Randeep Hooda has become one of the most sought-after actors of recent times, having dabbled in not just Indian cinema but also in Hollywood. The Highway actor, known for his gritty on-screen presence and versatility to play distinctive roles, has shared the screen with some of the industry's biggest names, including Salman Khan and Sunny Deol in India, and Hollywood action icons like Chris Hemsworth and John Cena. Randeep recently shared his experience working in both industries, revealing how the idea of superstardom differs across the action worlds.
Randeep has shared the screen with Salman Khan in films like Kick, Sultan and Radhe, and locked horns with Sunny Deol in Jaat, all of which are packed with heavy action sequences. In a recent interview with Mid-Day, the actor candidly revealed how action choreography in India is designed to complement the stardom of its legends, making them appear larger-than-life characters. Randeep was quoted as saying:
“The action is designed around them (Sunny Deol and Salman Khan). They’re both great. When you see them, you feel they can do it… They’re stars before the advent of the internet. They were rare commodities. Now, you know what every star is doing or eating, it’s all available on their social media. They have their persona, and that’s what I was trying to aim for.”
However, when it comes to Hollywood, it's a totally different scenario. Speaking about his experience working with Chris Hemsworth in Extraction and John Cena in the upcoming film, Matchbox, Randeep recalled gruelling rehearsals for weeks before shooting action scenes. While Indian male stars are often portrayed as superhumans, in Hollywood, it is more realistic. In his words:
“The difference is they come and rehearse for weeks and weeks before they do it. Me and Chris were rehearsing for six weeks before we did them. It looks real. That happens with rehearsals, like in theatre. They’re not as worshipped as our Indian male stars are, and that’s probably what keeps it somewhere real.”
Randeep has been in the acting industry for more than two decades, throughout which he has mostly played rugged and gritty characters like cops, gangsters and killers. However, despite his action-heavy roles in most films, he shared that he hadn't even thrown or taken real punches before starring in Extraction opposite Chris Hemsworth. This made him realise how little he had done all these years. Speaking about his experience, Hooda remarked:
“That was 2019. So for 19 years, I had the image of this tough guy in various roles, but I never punched anybody. I had to learn how to take and give a punch. It’s much like dance. You feel like you’ve done a lot, and then one morning, you wake up and realize, ‘Man, I haven’t done anything’.”
After making a global breakthrough with Extraction, Randeep is all set to grace the Hollywood screen with director, Sam Hargrave for the action-comedy, Matchbox, starring WWE champion and actor, John Cena. The film is slated for release in 2026 and promises to blend raw action with quirky humour.
