Rajesh Khanna is hailed as the first superstar of Hindi cinema to enjoy immense stardom. Born on December 29, 1942, as Jatin Khanna, Rajesh Khanna a.k.a, Kaka was one of the most sought-after and highest paid actors of Indian cinema. With movies like Haathi Mere SaathiKati PatangSacha JhuthaAan Milo SajnaChoti Bahu, Anand and many more, Rajesh Khanna has an unbroken record of 15 solo hits from 1969 to 1971.

The handsome actor broke many hearts when he decided to marry actress, Dimple Kapadia in 1973. Soon after the marriage, Rajesh and Dimple hopped on to parenthood and welcomed their daughters, Twinkle and Rinke. The actor was at the top of his career. However, mysteriously, his career went down, making him worried. Rajesh’s falling career was one of the reasons for his separation from Dimple.

Long before Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat and Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartment, Rajesh Khanna’s home, Aashirwad, was a must-visit landmark for every tourist who ever visited Mumbai. The sprawling bungalow was the home of superstar, Rajesh Khanna, who ruled the industry for years. However, after Rajesh Khanna’s downfall, the bungalow got the tag of being ‘cursed’. It is believed that whoever lived here had undergone losses, debts, failed careers and marriage.

Bharat Bhushan’s career went downhill after he purchased Aashirwad

Aashirwad was initially owned by an Anglo-Indian family and was later purchased by actor, Bharat Bhushan, who was one of the leading actors of the 1950s. Hailed for his performances in Baiju Bawra and Mirza Ghalib, Bharat Bhushan enjoyed a lot of fame. As soon as he purchased Aashirwad, Bharat, who was considered in the league of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, saw his films getting flopped at the box office. Drowned in debt, the actor had to sell the bungalow.

Rajendra Kumar became a victim of the cursed bungalow

Rajendra Kumar, who was also hailed as Jubilee Kumar for his ‘silver jubilee’ hits was the second actor to live in the house. He purchased the house in 1960 for Rs. 60,000. But soon, the actor, whose films created records at the box office, stopped working all of a sudden. He, too, let go of the house, thinking that it was cursed. Rumours of the bungalow being cursed started hitting the headlines.

Fall of Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom

Rajesh Khanna was at the peak of his stardom when he purchased Aashirwad in the 1970s for Rs. 3.5 lakhs. The bungalow was previously named ‘Dimple’ by Rajendra Kumar, based on his daughter’s name. But when Rajesh brought the bungalow, he requested Rajendra to keep the name, but he denied it since his other bungalow was also named ‘Dimple’. Eventually, Rajesh renamed the bungalow as Aashirwad.

When Rajesh Khanna purchased the bungalow, he was the superstar of Hindi cinema with back-to-back hits. Soon, his films fell flat due to the emerging star, Amitabh Bachchan. Not just this, Rajesh’s personal life too went for a toss as he separated from his wife, Dimple, and she left his house with their children. The actor continued to live in Aashirwad till his last days in 2011 and died a lonely death.

Rajesh Khanna’s downfall made people believe that the house was cursed. In 2014, it was purchased by an industrialist, Shashi Kiran Shetty, for Rs. 90 crores. The property has been demolished, and a new property is built on the land.
