A new book about the British royal family and the country's politicians is about to be released in the UK on September 11, 2025. The book by Valentine Low, titled Power and the Palace: The Inside Story of the Monarchy and 10 Downing Street, offers a close look at the relationship between the government and the British monarchy over the past two decades.
If the reports are to be believed, a total of 100 interviews are featured in this book, providing an in-depth look at the political influence and operations that helped shape the royal institution. On August 31, 2025, an excerpt was published in The Times, featuring an unknown story about Queen Camilla and one of her personal experiences as a teenager.
The book features several encounters between Queen Camilla and then-London Mayor Boris Johnson. It was Guto Harri who worked with Boris and revealed that Queen Camilla had invited the then mayor to Clarence House for the first meeting. Upon their encounter, they had a deeply impactful conversation, including one of the Queen's personal experiences as a schoolgirl. Boris Johnson wanted to open three rape crisis centres in London, and while they were conversing about the same, Queen Camilla shared her personal experience, which was about an attempted sexual assault on her during her teen years.
Queen, when she was about 16-17, was travelling in a train to reach Paddington, and a guy was moving his hands on her further and further. Queen, as per the book, did what her mom taught her. Camilla took her heels and whacked that man. Upon arriving at Paddington, she jumped off the train and complained about that guy, after which he was arrested. The quote from the book can be read as:
"She was on a train going to Paddington — she was about 16, 17 — and some guy was moving his hand further and further … 'At that point, Johnson had asked what happened next. She replied: 'I did what my mother taught me to. I took off my shoe and whacked him in the nuts with the heel."
Guto Harri, told the author, Low, that the reason this conversation occurred was that Boris wanted to open three rape crisis centres in East, North and West London, given that a centre was already there in the South. Guto further mentioned that Queen Camilla opened two of the centres out of the three, and while nobody could understand what the interest was, her personal experience as a teenager could be one of the factors.

Queen Camilla's priority in her public work has been to provide support to the victims and survivours of rape, domestic violence and sexual abuse. It was last year, when Queen hosted an event in Buckingham Palace to honour the supporters of the survivors of sexual assault, where she also relaunched the Wash Bags Project, which helped to provide basic toiletries to the survivors. Apart from that, it was in March when she reached out to Gisèle Pelicot, a rape victim, to commend her for her courage after being assaulted by her husband, including being drugged and raped.
