For most 12-year-olds, responsibilities include attending school and studying, as well as making friends. However, for the 12-year-old Prince George of Wales, responsibility encompasses all the mentioned aspects, including the U.K. monarchy, relations with world leaders, and maintaining a positive public image. However, as per reports, his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have made sure to let the young boy enjoy his childhood while also being aware of his 'destiny'. Here's an inside look at how the future King and Queen of the UK are parenting the next future King, George.
In an interview with People, royal biographer, Robert Hardman provided insight into how Prince George is gradually stepping into the spotlight. The writer revealed that Prince William, who is next in line for the British throne, gives equal importance to his role as the future King as well as preparing his son for the same position. His wife, the next in line for the role of Queen consort, Kate Middleton, has also made sure to train their son for his 'destiny'.
Earlier, in May 2025, Prince George joined his parents and his grandfather, King Charles III, for tea with World War II veterans. In the event which was organised to honour the veterans, Prince George's calm and mature appearance stole the show. The 12-year-old prince was noted to be talking confidently with the attendees, giving a glimpse into his future handling of the monarchy.
Though Prince George showcases a more calm demeanour, his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, show a lively spark as young children. As per reports, Prince William and Kate Middleton have strived hard to provide their kids with a normal childhood, despite the world's eyes always on them. They have also adopted a more modern approach to parenting, enrolling the siblings in the same co-ed school, which is a rare choice for royal families.
Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, grew up watching their parents, Charles and Diana's, tumultuous marriage and divorce being publicised to the whole world. Kate Middleton, on the other hand, enjoyed a quiet and happy childhood. Hence, Robert Hardman revealed that the children are being brought up influenced by their mother's side of parenting. Insider sources have also revealed that the royal parents want Prince George to have freedom and enjoy it as well. Prince William especially wants his son to enjoy the responsibility rather than fear it. The biographer revealed:

"William takes his role as father of the future King as seriously as he takes his role as future King. That’s key. His overarching priority is making sure they enjoy it rather than fear it.”
As per reports, King Charles III was called 'Sir' at school due to his future role in the kingdom. However, Prince William dropped the title and was called by his first name. George is also following his father's footsteps rather than his grandfather's. The 12-year-old prince has a close circle of friends and enjoys soccer matches. However, the king is suffering from cancer at 76. Hence, if William becomes the King of the UK before George finishes school, the father is likely to delay bestowing a title on the young prince, allowing him to enjoy his childhood, according to an insider source to People. As per the source, Prince George is also the most 'normal 12-year-old future monarch' the kingdom has ever had.
