Prem Chopra is one of the most iconic actors in Hindi cinema, who has redefined villainous characters, adding his personal charm to them. Throughout his career, Prem has taken on many impactful roles that were largely negative. However, his on-screen image made people wary of him, making it difficult for him to socialise.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Prem Chopra shared that his negative roles had a deep impact on his personal life. He revealed that attending family functions and weddings became awkward as people assumed that he would be just like the characters he portrays on screen. Guests at the functions often avoided him for this reason, and as a result, his father had to step in and explain that he was a good person and that the role he played on screen was just his job.

Not just this, the impact of Prem Chopra’s on-screen persona was such that men would hide their wives after seeing the actor. He also shared that people were not as emancipated as they are today, as the audience can now differentiate between an actor’s on-screen role and off-screen personality. Speaking about the same, he said:
“Men would hide their wives when they saw me. I would often go talk to them, and they were always surprised when they found out that I was just a regular guy, as good as any of them. Earlier, it was very difficult for an on-screen villain to play a good guy or a hero to be a negative character. People did not accept it."

In a career spanning over 60 years, Prem Chopra acted in over 380 films. He made his acting debut in a Punjabi film. When he started working in Hindi films, Prem Chopra did some positive roles, but he failed to make a mark. However, when he began appearing in films in villainous roles, Prem gained widespread recognition. With films like Upkar, Do Raaste, Kati Patang, Do Anjaane and Dostana, Prem proved his versatility as a villain in Hindi films.

In his long career, Prem was hailed for his outstanding work in villainous roles. Even after marriage, the actor never stopped doing intimate scenes with other actresses and was also aware of his bad image in public. However, he has been a very soft-spoken and kind-hearted man in reality. Talking about his personal life, Prem Chopra is married to Uma, the sister of Raj Kapoor’s wife, Krishna.
