'Peacemaker' Premiere, James Gunn Offers Update About His Upcoming Project 'Waller' Ft. Viola Davis

Peacemaker has been making the headlines for a long time now. The superhero black comedy drama series, set in the DC universe, has fans eagerly awaiting its second season. Well, their wait finally reached an end as Season 2 of the show premiered, and the red carpet for the same was held on August 13, 2025. However, during the interaction, James Gunn also gave his fans some big news. 

James Gunn shares an update about Waller

With Superman continuing to leap expectations in a single bound and the second season of John Cena-starring, Peacemaker set to hit HBO Max screens, it's been a busy time for DC Studios co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU and their teams. However, there are still a number of film and television projects that are in various stages of either development or production. During this evening's red carpet premiere for Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn was asked for a status update on one project that has a direct connection to the HBO Max series. James was asked about the Viola Davis-starring spinoff series, Waller.

During the interaction, James Gunn revealed that they are working on Waller. However, some things just take time, and you can't mess with the process. Nonetheless, they shared their enthusiasm to see Viola Davis in her superhero outfit. In an interaction with The Hollywood Reporter, James stated that they are excited to see Viola do something special in her floral dresses. He was quoted as saying:

"We're working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that's been a thing that hasn't moved so fast. But I can't wait to see Viola (Davis) get her Waller outfits on, with her shity floral dresses and do something special."

James Gunn had previously cleared the rumours around Waller

In February 2024, James Gunn shared that there were several reasons why Waller was moved after the second season of Peacemaker. He shared that they won't start the production of the series unless the script of the show is complete, as quality was their top priority. In February 2025, Safran shared insights into the project with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that they haven't reached their desired destination, making Waller a bumpy road. James was quoted as saying:

"The only shuffling done was moving 'Waller' after 'PM' for a variety of reasons. And, yes, unlike most studios, we'll never start production on a process if the script isn't finished. Quality is the utmost priority."

Since James Gunn and Safran's statement, there has been hype around the series, and the latest update has clarified that Waller is still in the picture. However, with time, rumours started rumbling that Waller was going to be turned into a series focusing on Checkmate, a division of Task Force X, and that the new series would focus more on an ensemble cast and not solely on 'Waller'. However, in June 2025, James clarified that the rumours were groundless and complete 'BS'.
