The Hera Pheri franchise has always remained relevant, even though it was released 25 years ago. Both films have made huge contributions to the memes and pop culture of India. They also carry a sense of nostalgia for all the 90s and 2000s kids. However, the franchise has become the talk of the town again, given the announcement of a third instalment, Hera Pheri 3, and the controversy surrounding its star cast, especially Paresh Rawal.
As of now, Paresh Rawal will not be a part of Hera Pheri 3 and will not be back to reprise his role of 'Baburao'. This decision of the star has not only left the fans disappointed but has also ensued a legal battle with co-star and movie producer, Akshay Kumar. However, in an old interview, Paresh Rawal had revealed that he was not on board for the sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, either. Read on to learn everything he said about the second instalment.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Paresh Rawal talked at length about the Hera Pheri franchise and his iconic character of 'Baburao'. The actor stated his opinion that the second film, Phir Hera Pheri, wasn't that good. Everyone was confident about the film, given the success of the first movie. However, the innocence and simplicity of the story were lost, as per Paresh. The actor further revealed that he warned director of Phir Hera Pheri, Neeraj Vohra, that he was overstuffing the film, and adviced him to keep it simple, otherwise it would get messy. In his own words, Paresh Rawal said:
“Everybody was overconfident about the film. It lost its innocence. Sorry to say, but wo film nahi bani thi barabar. I would tell Neeraj Vohra, tu bhar raha hai ismein, it isn’t required. I asked him to keep the simplicity that was there in the first film. It will get messy if you overfill the film. People will laugh at anything; they will laugh if somebody is running naked, but we don’t have to run naked. The sense of proportion should be on you.”
Talking about his character of 'Baburao', Paresh Rawal said that putting the same character in another backdrop and just changing the jokes is meaningless. He further stated that making a sequel 'just to mint money isn't fun'. In another interview with The Lallantop, the actor also critiqued Bollywood for making sequels of well-loved movies to cash in the popularity and earn even more money.
Paresh Rawal had left all the Hera Pheri fans shocked when he called his most popular portrayal of 'Baburao' a 'gale ka phanda'. Despite the presence of superstars like Akshay Kumar and Suneil Shetty, Paresh Rawal had become the show-stealer of the franchise, but the actor recently revealed his frustration with the image that has been stuck to him. As an actor, he wants to explore more roles and characters, but he has been suffocatingly stuck with the image of 'Baburao', stated Paresh. The actor also said that if a filmmaker wanted, they could upscale the character. However, most people either have 'mental bankruptcy or mental lethargy to take a plunge', stated the actor.
