It is the dream of every girl to have a fairytale wedding. Who does not want to twirl in a lehenga, blush when the groom arrives, do the varmala ceremony or just say qubool hai? Every woman wants to click the best wedding pictures on her wedding and dance in the arms of her beloved, but 'Har kisi ko nahi milta yaha pyaar zindagi mei'. Lately, a Pakistani woman named, Azima Ihsan, a divorcee and mother to 3, stormed the internet with her scintillating dance performance that had a message on how divorce was looked at in Pakistan.
Lately, a video has gone viral where a Pakistani lady, Azima, was dancing effortlessly and gracefully to the beautiful song, Maghron La by Coke Studio Pakistan. It looked as if she was doing her breakup, divorce dance. Clad in traditional attire, she was seen dancing to the soulful beats of the song and received applause from the audience. She revealed in her caption how she found the perfect song to dance as a recently divorced Pakistani woman. However, her caption spoke about how divorce was seen as a stigma in Pakistan. It read:
"Divorced. Desi. Thriving. Divorce in the Pakistani community - tbh, is treated like a death sentence—especially for women. I was told my life was over, I’d regret it, my life is going to go down hill and happiness? Forget it. The judgment still comes, but guess what? I dance through it. I laugh through it. Life isn’t as bad as I was told it would be. The opposite actually."
Ihsan was seen dancing at a small gathering on a social occasion. She looked ethereal in a blue Pakistani suit with flared pants. Her attire had golden embroidery. She wrote in her caption about how everyone acts like ‘divorce’ is a dirty word when it should be seen as what it can be: a fresh start. Yes, it’s hard and heartbreaking, lonely. Ihsan shared that staying stuck in a marriage where you can’t breathe was not normal but worse. A part of her post also read:
"To be stuck in an unhappy marriage is way worse than being divorced. I didn’t choose this journey lightly, I actually never wanted to be a divorcee but for me and my three kids? It was freedom. Even for my ex-partner - it was the best decision for the both of us.”
Ihsan in her post further empowered women and said that marriage should be built on love and respect, not fear of stigma. She has seen too many Pakistani women sacrificing themselves just to avoid that ‘divorced’ label. to them, she said that soon matters, life goes on, and one should not be upset. She also revealed in her post that she has been divorced for two years. In her words:
"Two years post-divorce, I’m living proof - you can simultaneously cry, heal, and then DANCE like nobody’s watching.”
