Ozzy Ozbourne, the legendary ‘Prince of Darkness’, took a final bow on July 22, 2025, leaving his family, friends, and global admirers in mourning. After gifting the world his swansong performance at his homecoming with Black Sabbath a few days ago, the 76-year-old metal icon left an unimaginable void in the world of Rock and Roll. In the wake of his death, fans have been revisiting the many layers of Ozzy’s life, from his thunderous legacy, chaotic charm, and unwavering family bonds to his deeply personal pact that he shared with his wife, Sharon Osbourne.

Behind the superstardom and heavy metal buzz, Ozzy Osborne and Sharon had once opened up about something far more intimate (and sombre): they had promised each other to choose dignity over prolonged suffering when the time comes, and help them go peacefully. 

The shocking revelation first surfaced in 2007 when Sharon Osbourne released her memoir, Survivor: My Story – The Next Chapter. In it, the music manager openly shared that she and Ozzy had made a mutual pact that stated if either of them were ever diagnosed with a degenerative brain condition like Alzheimer’s, they would pursue assisted suicide.

They had even chosen the facility to be Dignitas, a Swiss clinic internationally known for offering legal and compassionate end-of-life options to those suffering from terminal or debilitating illnesses. In a 2007 interview with The Mirror, Sharon shared her and Ozzy’s conversation with their children about the matter. She said:

"We believe 100 per cent in euthanasia, so (we) have drawn up plans to go to the assisted suicide flat in Switzerland if we ever have an illness that affects our brains. If Ozzy or I ever got Alzheimer’s, that’s it — we’d be off. We gathered the kids around the kitchen table, told them our wishes, and they’ve all agreed to go with it."

Sharon, daughter of music mogul Don Arden, had witnessed firsthand the devastating decline of her father due to Alzheimer’s till his death in 2002. Deeply scarred by the experience and fearing a similar fate in the future, she vowed never to let her children endure that same anguish. She shared:

“From the day (my father) came back into my life in 2002 to the day he died, he suffered. I couldn't ever put my kids through that… He became a shell — dribbling, wearing a diaper, tied into a wheelchair because he didn’t realise he could no longer walk. Some say the disease is hereditary, so at the first sign, I want to be put out of my misery."

Throughout his dazzling career, Ozzy has been known as much for his unpredictability as his vulnerability. He was on the same page with his wife and stood firm on the decision of assisted suicide. In a 2014 interview, the Prince of Darkness shared his stance on the matter and said:

"If I can't live my life the way I'm living it now — and I don't mean financially — then that's it… If I can't get up and go to the bathroom myself and I've got tubes up my ass and an enema in my throat, then I've said to Sharon, 'Just turn the machine off.' If I had a stroke and was paralysed, I don't want to be here. I've made a will and it's all going to Sharon if I die before her, so ultimately it will all go to the kids."

Kelly Osbourne’s fierce pushback on her parents’ assisted suicide pact, days before Ozzy’s passing

Ozzy and Sharon’s unusual pact has sparked headlines for years, but recent developments suggest their children had mixed feelings about it, particularly their 40-year-old daughter, Kelly Osbourne. On July 11, 2025, just days before Ozzy’s passing, Kelly addressed the rumours on her Instagram Story, dismissing the assisted suicide pact and insisting her father, though battling Parkinson’s, was not dying. She was heard saying:

"Stop making articles or posts about how you think my parents are having a suicide pact. That was b--ls-t, my mom said to get attention one time. And my dad's not dying. Stop!"

Before this, on a 2023 episode of The Osbournes Podcast, the topic came up again when their son, Jack, asked if euthanasia was still in the cards, and Sharon gave an affirmative nod to it.
