Oscar Winners 2026: Close Race Between Timothee Chalamet And Micheal B. Jordan For Best Actor Award

The most awaited Oscars 2026 is finally here! Fans will finally find out whether their favourite actors, whom they have been rooting for, will take home a golden statuette. Well, among the different categories in the 2026 Academy Awards, at present, all eyes are on the Best Actor category. Two of the strongest contenders in the race for Best Actor are none other than actor, Timothée Chalamet for his performance in Marty Supreme and Michael B. Jordan for his role in Sinners.  

Who is ahead in the race to win Best Actor at the Oscars 2026? 

Just a couple of weeks before the 2026 Oscars, it seemed like Timothée Chalamet was the clear frontrunner for the Best Actor category at the 2026 Oscars. This was especially the case owing to his outstanding performance in the Marty Supreme. However, as the date for the 2026 Oscars started to draw near, the momentum started to shift significantly when actor, Michael B. Jordan moved into the lead.  

It is worth noting that Timothée began the 2026 awards season with a much greater advantage than his rival in the Oscars Best Actor category, Michael. For instance, in January 2026, Timothée bagged both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for his performance in Marty Supreme. For those unaware, in the film, Timothée can be seen stepping into the shoes of a narcissistic table tennis player. To reach his ultimate goal of travelling to the World Championship in Tokyo, Japan, Timothée's character, ‘Marty Mauser', looks for various ways to make a quick buck. To mention, not only did Marty Supreme earn a lot of critical praise, but it also saw a huge success at the box office. In fact, Marty Supreme became one of A24's highest-grossing releases ever. If reports are believed to be true, Marty Supreme has earned a whopping USD 162 million worldwide.  

Things took a massive turn when Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor award at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards) for his dual role as twin brothers ‘Smoke’ and ‘Sack’ in Sinners. Well, many consider a SAG win a strong sign of Oscar success because several SAG voters are also members of the Academy. Based on online reports, currently, awards analysts have started placing their bets on Michael B. Jordan over Timothée Chalamet, giving the Sinners star a nearly 60 per cent chance of winning compared to Timothée's declining odds.  

What factors contributed to Michael B. Jordan getting ahead of Timothée Chalamet in the race to win Best Actor at the Oscars 2026? 

The movie, Sinners has emerged as one of the most powerful contenders in this awards season. Set in the Jim Crow era, the film's strong themes of racism and supernatural horror, while following the twin brothers returning home after World War I, have struck a chord with the audience. Additionally, Michael's dual roles in the movie have also earned a whole lot of recognition from critics and voters alike.   

On the other hand, Timothée Chalamet's campaign for Marty Supreme was one full of viral stunts, social media appearances, and unconditional moments of publicity. While some of the results were good, the rest were not. Many believed the campaign was rather excessive, especially among more traditional Academy voters. Additionally, Timothée recently found himself in the midst of controversy when he claimed that “nobody cares” about ballet and opera. As you might have already guessed, he received a huge backlash online for the same.
