Popular television actress, Nyra Banerjee, best known for shows like Pishachini and Naagin, has been missing from the daily soap circuit for a while. After her stint in Bigg Boss 18, Nyra has mostly steered clear from showbiz, especially from Television, raising concerns about what could have caused this disappearance. In a recent interview, Nyra opened up about the same, stating that her disappearance from TV is mainly caused by existing stereotypes and underpaid lead roles.
Nyra Banerjee was last seen on Bigg Boss 18, and after that, she has taken a step back from soap acting. In a chat with Zoom/Telly Talk India, the actress finally opened up on why she chose to distance herself from television. Turns out, it was a deliberate decision from Nyra’s part, since she started getting typecast into playing supernatural characters after her back-to-back works in Nagain and Pishachini. Talking about the tendency of TV stars getting stereotyped for certain specific projects, Nyra shared:
“Yes, I have been away from TV for quite some time. I am very adamant about doing different roles. After Pishachini, 90 per cent of supernatural shows that have happened were offered to me, and I didn't want to do it… I don't want to do it back-to-back because TV stereotypes very easily. I am an actor, and I love to explore my roles… That's the reason I have been away from TV.”
Nyrraa stressed that she is an actress who loves exploring diverse characters and not sticking to one bracket just because she excelled in it once. But that’s not all; the BB 18 fame also revealed the financial reason behind her television break, sharing that TV actors and leads are not getting paid enough due to a drop in the markets of daily soaps. Nyra added:
“The markets have really dropped. They are not paying the lead actors what they deserve. I also want the shoot locations to be kept as per my convenience. The budget has to be as per my liking. I want to work as per my comfort. Two roles come to me very easily. One is a pretty girl in supernatural shows or the queen princess lead. Such kinds of shows need a very high budget. I mostly get approached for those.”
Further in the interview, Nyra shared why the television industry no longer excites her. The actress highlighted the tendency of TV shows to experiment with similar premises and village stories. She added that shows purposely start off regressive just to highlight ‘progress’ later. In her words:
“I have not been watching TV. Now, it has become a trend to show village stories. Eventually, they turn out to be similar stories… But I can say one thing that I haven't seen very exciting lately. What is common is that they make it regressive purposely to show the progress. This is where we are stuck. Women from rural areas find those stories very appealing. Yes, India has a majority of people from rural areas watching TV.”
In an earlier interview with Moneycontrol, Nyra shared that she has both a web series and a film lined up, but the details are under wraps for now. What do you think of her revelation about disappearing from television?
