Barcelona resident, Noelia Castillo Ramos, is currently being widely discussed due to her heart-wrenching story and legally-backed decision to end her life on her own accord. The 25-year-old Spanish woman became the subject of a landmark legal and ethical debate after successfully fighting for her right to die through voluntary euthanasia. She passed away on March 26, 2026 at a long-term care facility in Sant Pere de Ribes. Amid that, new information has surfaced regarding the decision allegedly being imposed on Noeila. The rumours have sparked from her lawyer's recent remark.
Polonia Castellanos, a lawyer representing the family of 25-year-old, Noelia Castillo Ramos, has alleged that a Spanish hospital pressured Noelia to proceed with euthanasia because her organs were "already committed" for donation. He claimed that when legal measures were sought to stop the euthanasia procedure in August 2024, the health centre told Noelia's mother it could not be postponed as they had already registered Noelia's organs for donation. According to the lawyer, these statements from the hospital led Noelia's mother to ask her daughter to sign a document stating she no longer wished to donate her organs. The lawyer's words (as translated from Spanish) can be read as:
"This refers to her mother's words. When we won the first injunction, what they told her was, 'You can't do that because all your organs were already compromised.' So, what we...Who tells her mother that? They tell her from the hospital."

The organisation representing Noelia's father, Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers), argued that the hospital's interest in organ donation influenced her decision to move forward with euthanasia. Following the revelation, X (formerly Twitter) users also alleged that 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos was having "second thoughts" days before her death. However, the hospital officials coerced her into moving ahead with the decision by mentioning the organ donation finalisation. These bombshell allegations have raised eyebrows, and netizens are waiting for a clarification from the hospital's officials.
The actual reason for Noelia Castillo Ramos's decision to undergo euthanasia was her unbearable physical and mental suffering. She was molested by her ex-boyfriend and then fell victim to a gang rape in a state-supervised centre in 2022. Following those incidents, Noeila attempted to end her life by jumping from a fifth-floor window. She survived the fall but was left with paraplegia and suffered from constant neuropathic pain and sensory disorders. Beyond her physical injuries, she faced severe mental health challenges, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and borderline personality disorder. Thus, she wanted to end her suffering by dying.

Noelia Castillo Ramos' parents were absolutely against her undergoing euthanasia and voluntarily ending her life. Noeila's father, Geronimo Castillo was the primary legal opponent to her request for euthanasia. He led a 601-day legal campaign against his daughter's euthanasia plea, supported by the conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers). Geronimo argued that Noeila lacked the mental capacity to make such a big decision due to her diagnosed personality disorder.
Noelia's father also pointed to "the obligation of the state to protect the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable, as is the case with a young person with mental health problems." Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, also publicly disagreed with her choice of euthanasia; however, she tried to respect her daughter's autonomy and did not cause any legal or other kind of disruption. The Spanish courts ultimately rejected Noeila's parents' appeals, ruling in favour of Noeila.
We share our heartfelt condolences to Noelia Castillo Ramos' family as they deal with her loss.
