Nirmala Sitharaman was ranked thirty-sixth in the Forbes 2022 List of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women. Born on August 18, 1959, she became India's first full-time female Finance Minister on May 31, 2019. Nirmala Sitharaman retained her position as India's Finance Minister in 2024 after Narendra Modi came to power for a third term. Thus, so far, she has presented seven consecutive budgets (including one interim budget) in her career as India's Finance Minister.

On February 1, 2025, Nirmala Sitharaman presented her career's record eighth consecutive Union budget. For the uninitiated, Sitharaman surpassed India's former Finance Minister, Yashwantrao Chavan, who presented the budget seven times. She is now in third position with late politician, Pranab Mukherjee, who had presented eight budgets. P. Chidambaram is in second place with nine budgets. The record-holder with the most budgets is former Prime Minister of India, Morarji Desai, who has presented ten budgets.

Apart from presenting eight consecutive budgets, Nirmala Sitharaman also holds the record for the longest speech. She gave a two-hour and forty-minute speech back on February 1, 2020, while presenting India's union budget. Finance isn't the only division where Sitharaman has made her mark, she is also only the second woman in India's history after former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi to hold the position of Defence Minister. However, Sitharaman is India's first female full-time and 28th Defence Minister.

Nirmala Sitharaman was born on August 18, 1959, in a Tamil Iyengar family in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai. She completed her schooling from Villupuram's Sacred Heart Convent School, Chennai's Vidyodaya School, Tiruchirappalli's St. Philomena's School and Holy Cross School. The Finance Minister completed a graduation degree in Economics from the Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College.

Nirmala Sitharaman pursued a post-graduation degree in Economics and an M.Phil from Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. During her college days, Sitharaman won numerous awards as an orator for her exceptional oratorical skills. Time and again, we have seen those skills in action during her speeches.

Talking about Nirmala Sitharaman's personal life, she is married to Parakala Prabhakar, who is a famous Indian economist and political commentator. Not only this, Prabhakar is also among the founding members of the Praja Rajyam Party. The couple married in 1986 and are parents to a daughter named Parakala Vangmayi.

According to some reports, Nirmala Sitharaman and Parakala Prabhakar met while studying at Dlehi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. Not everyone is aware of the lesser-known fact that Nirmala Sitharaman enrolled on a PhD program in Economics but left it mid-way after her husband secured a scholarship at the prestigious London School of Economics.

Moving on to Nirmala Sitharaman and Parakala Prabhakar's daughter, Parakala Vangmayi, was born in Chennai on May 20, 1991. Despite her parents' strong political background, Vangmayi decided to stay away from Indian politics. She is currently pursuing a career in writing and journalism. According to a report in India.com, Vangmayi works at Mint Lounge as a feature writer. Sitharaman and Prabhakar's daughter broke into the headlines when she married India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's close aide, Pratik Doshi, in 2023.

For the uninitiated, Parakala Vangmayi and Pratik Doshi got married on June 8, 2023, in a low-key wedding ceremony in Bengaluru. Talking about Finance Minister's son-in-law, Pratik Doshi, he works as a special duty officer with PM Narendra Modi. Back in 2019, Pratik was elevated to the rank of joint secretary. Pratik has also worked in the research and strategy wing of the PMO.

Talking about the educational background of Parakala Vangmayi's husband, Pratik Doshi is an alumnus of the Singapore Management School and has previously worked at Gujarat's Chief Minister's Office. Just like Nirmala Sitharaman and her husband, Parakala Prabhakar, their daughter, Parakala Vangmayi and her hubby, Pratik Doshi, prefer to guard their personal lives from the media spotlight.
