Netflix Teases New 'Kennedy' Series, And It's NOT About JFK Jr. And Carolyn Bessette: Meet The Cast

After the success of Ryan Murphy's nine-episode FX drama, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, the Kennedy legacy is once again taking centre stage with a brand new series. After months of talk about an upcoming project, Netflix has officially shared the first look at its upcoming drama, Kennedy, offering a first glimpse. The series promises to go beyond the famous love story of JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette and explore the origins, ambitions, and inner workings of America's most talked-about political dynasty. Two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender spearheads the star cast.

Netflix shares first look at its upcoming drama, Kennedy

Unlike Murphy's Love Story, which mainly focused on the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Netflix’s upcoming drama expands its range to explore the entire family legacy that began long before the Camelot heir's tragedy made headlines, starting with the family's patriarch, Joe Kennedy Sr., father of Joseph, John (JFK), Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert (RFK), Jean, and Edward Kennedy.

Inspired by the book JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956 by Fredrik Logevall, Kennedy will take viewers back to the 1930s when it all began. The eight-episode first season of the historical drama traces the rise of the family under Joe Kennedy Sr. and matriarch Rose Kennedy, capturing the relationships, rivalries, and ambitions that shaped the political dynasty. 

Meet the powerhouse cast of Netflix's Kennedy

At the centre of the cast is Michael Fassbender, the German-Irish actor known for his versatile performances in projects like Inglourious Basterds (2009), 12 Years a Slave (2013), and the X-Men Series (2011-2019). In the first look shared by the streamer, Fassbender takes on the role of 'Joe Kennedy Sr.', the patriarch whose complex ambition helped define the family's political legacy. Joining him as 'Rose Kennedy' will be Laura Donnelly, the Irish actress known for her stellar performance in Outlander.

Regarding the younger generation of the Kennedy clan, actor Nick Robinson plays the role of Joe Sr.'s first son and eldest child, 'Joe Kennedy Jr.'; Joshuah Melnick becomes the young 'John F. Kennedy'; and Lydia Peckham becomes the third child, 'Rosemary Kennedy'. The series also extends beyond the core family and includes key historical figures such as Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and J. Edgar Hoover. Imogen Poots steps into the role of Gloria Swanson, who was a business associate of Joe Sr. and was alleged to have a romantic connection with him.

What is the new series about?

According to Netflix Tudum, Kennedy is going to be a multi-season series and will do a deep-dive into the long-fabled history of the Kennedy dynasty, separating myth from reality. The series promises the human stories that were buried by years of speculation and whispered theories. Showrunner Sam Shaw says:

“The story of the Kennedys is the closest we have to American mythology... [it] pulls a veil on the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present moment, how we got here and where we’re going, as about the Kennedys themselves."

The show's production has already begun, and it's underway in London. With the recent talks surrounding JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette's love story, as well as the dark lore of the "Kennedy Curse" that connected their fatal 1999 plane crash, the curiosity around the dynasty is at its peak. If Love Story captured the emotional end of one chapter, Netflix’s new series is promising a layered look at ambition, legacy, and the price the Kennedy dynasty had to pay for power.
