Netflix's 'Brick' Ending Explained, Know If 'Tim' And 'Olivia' Really Escaped The Wall Or Not?

Netflix just released a psychological thriller, Brick and in less than a day, it has managed to pull a good amount of crowd. Netflix's Brick has left a lot of viewers with questions after its intense and twisted ending. The German film, which is directed by Philip Koch, follows a couple who are trapped inside their apartment after a strange wall surrounds it overnight. The movie is about survival mixed with science fiction. Here is a simple breakdown of the film's mysterious ending.

The plot of Netflix’s Brick

The film follows 'Tim' (played by Matthias Schweighöfer) and 'Olivia' (played by Ruby O. Fee), who are a couple and whose marriage is on the verge to end. 'Olivia' plans to leave 'Tim', but before she can do anything, the couple wakes up one day to find that their apartment is trapped inside a black, metallic wall. The doors and windows are completely blocked, and they have no phone signal or water supply. They are completely cut off with the outside world.

The couple who is desperate to survive, comes in contact with their neighbours, 'Marvin', 'Ana', 'Yuri', 'Lea', and 'Oswalt', where they all together try to find the reason behind this weird situation. Eventually, they got to know that a man named 'Anton', who died recently, used to work for a defence company, 'Epsilon Nanodefense'. A fire at the office occurred the same night as walls, which could be the possible reason for this situation.

Why were there hidden cameras?

While the group was searching for a solution, they found out that the building's manager, 'Mr. Friedman' had set up hidden cameras in the apartments. With the help of those cameras, he used to watch the tenants without their knowledge. The group was shocked to learn about the camera, especially after they saw 'Friedman' dead.

Initially, the group had thought that they were being monitored by the person who was controlling the wall, but they later discovered that the camera had nothing to do with the wall's creation or its purpose. Instead, the camera helped them find some important truths, through the old footage. Through the footage, they even found out that 'Yuri' had killed 'Anton', the man who had created the app that could open the wall. After seeing the old footage, the entire dynamics of the characters changed, as now they were seeing 'Yuri' as a threat.

Did Tim and Olivia break the wall?

The key to escape the wall lies in the unfinished app created by 'Anton'. The only way to escape was to figure out, complete the app and use it correctly. In desperation to find the solution, 'Tim' saw the old footage of the cameras in which 'Anton' used the phone to open a section of the wall.

'Tim' used the clues from the footage and realised that the wall responds to light sequences, just like a QR code. He tried to recreate the app 'Anton' developed, which emits light signals to unlock the wall. However, his first attempt failed miserably, killing 'Ana' when the wall resets and cuts her in half.

After trial and error, 'Tim' and 'Olivia' successfully used the app to open a section of the wall in the basement. But before they could escape, 'Yuri' stopped them to kill them, like he killed some of the group members earlier. Ultimately, 'Olivia' killed 'Yuri' and she along with 'Tim' managed to escape the wall.

The ending of Brick explained

At last, the couple manages to escape the wall only to see that the entire city is covered by the same black walls. They are shocked to see it, and they get into their van to drive away. On the radio they hear an announcement, which said:

"It has now been confirmed that the fire at Epsilon Nanodefense triggered a serious malfunction that activated a secret defense system. It remains unclear whether the fire was natural or an act of sabotage. People who have been able to reach safety are strongly advised to stay together."

Symbolically, the wall represents the emotional barrier between the couple and their escape highlights them overcoming their grief and deciding to move forward together. While the cause of the wall is partly unexplained, it does convey that 'Tim' and 'Olivia' decided to start their lives again with a fresh start.
