Mohammed Rafi was one of the most popular playback singers, who won hearts through his soulful voice. On the other hand, Lata Mangeshkar and her sister, Asha Bhosle, had made their place in the industry. The sister duo also recorded duets with Mohammed Rafi that became hits and are popularly known as part of the golden era of Hindi cinema. Now, in a recent interview, Mohammed Rafi’s son, Shahid Rafi, slammed the sister duo for their jealousy. He opened up about how Lata and Asha tried to sabotage his father’s career.
In a recent conversation with Vickey Lalwani, Shahid Rafi spoke his heart out and revealed how Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle allegedly tried to undermine his father's career out of jealousy. He shared that the singer duo didn’t like to hear people calling his father a number one artist. He remembered the time, when his father, Mohammed Rafi, was depressed and had spent nine years at home. In his words:
"They were jealous that Rafi saab was on top of them; they wanted everyone to be below. People were calling him number one, and they didn’t like that. I heard somewhere that he was sitting at home for nine years and was depressed. Please! Just listen to any song he sang in the 1970s."
In the same conversation, Shahid Rafi opened up about Lata Mangeshkar’s insecurity, as many other singers, including her own sister, Asha Bhosle, were coming up to make their place in the industry. He claimed it was not his dad, but Lata, who asked the legendary singer for forgiveness. Recalling the moment, when he had a chat with Lata before she passed away, Shahid said:
"I had told Lata ji as much before her passing. She claimed that his career was spiralling, and that he asked her to forgive him. He never said this. I can tell you that Lata ji said this, and two people came to dad and asked him to forgive her. So many other singers were coming up, including her own sister. And she was insecure. He didn’t even have time for us in those days. I will never tolerate anybody speaking ill of my dad. I will not keep quiet, whoever it is. My father was my father, and I knew where he stood."
Further in the same conversation, Shahid Rafi slammed Asha Bhosle for her harsh remarks on Mohammed Rafi. He mentioned that he would not tolerate anyone who spoke ill of his father. He directly addressed the legendary singer and said that she is a learned person, and should consider her age before making ill remarks about the late singer. He was quoted as saying:
"You are a learned person; have some shame. Not at this age. Put this! I’m telling her directly. Upar waala baitha hai. Mere baap ke baare mein koi kuch bolega toh mere se bardaasht nahi hota. You’ve gone old, talk about yourself."
What are your thoughts on Shahid Rafi's accusations about Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle? Let us know.
