JD and Usha Vance are excited to welcome their fourth child. The current Vice President of the U.S. and the Second Lady, who share three children, two sons and a daughter, recently announced that they are all set to expand the family, with a fourth, a baby boy, on the way.

The pregnancy announcement comes after months of speculation about a potential rift in JD and Usha's marriage. In case you didn't know, rumours were rife that the marriage had run its course, given the Second Lady's notable absence from numerous events recently. However, the couple's announcement suggests that her well-being might have been the reason.

Although American by birth, Usha has strong roots in India as the daughter of parents from the Telugu Brahmin community. Her parents, Radhakrishna “Krish” Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri, immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s and settled in San Diego. Her father is an aerospace engineer and professor at San Diego State University, while her mother is a molecular biology professor and provost at the University of California. The Chilukuris originally hail from Vadluru, Andhra Pradesh, and they still maintain close ties with their cultural roots.

Born Usha Bala Chilukuri on January 6, 1986, in San Diego County, the Second Lady was raised in a Hindu household and has an exceptional academic background. According to The New York Times, she earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University before completing a master’s degree in early modern history at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. In 2013, she received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. During her time at Yale, Usha served as Executive Development Editor of the Yale Law Journal and Managing Editor of the Yale Journal of Law and Technology.

Usha and JD's love story dates back to their college days. The two met in 2014 while attending Yale Law School and became close allies. During their time at Yale, they co-organised a discussion group to examine social decline in white America, themes that later shaped his critically acclaimed 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. The couple got married in 2014 after graduating from Yale. They reportedly had two ceremonies, one following the Hindu traditions and a Christian wedding.

As parents of three (soon four), Usha and JD Vance absolutely love their roles as in their growing family. The Vice President is often seen with his wife and kids at public events and outings. JD has often spoken publicly about the joy of fatherhood, and one of his memorable moments came in 2024, when he proudly read Oh, the Places You’ll Go! on the Senate floor for little Vivek’s birthday.

If we were to speak for the Second Lady herself, she has proven her mettle as not just a devoted partner but also as a doting mother and an accomplished professional. Congratulations to the to-be parents!
