Meet Rani Kapur, Karisma Kapoor's Ex-Mother-In-Law, Seeks Concern Over Son, Sunjay Kapur's Death

After more than a month of business tycoon, Sunjay Kapur’s untimely demise, his mother, Rani Kapur, is now leading the headlines after she spoke about foul play. She had written a letter to the Sona Comstar Board, which was led by Sunjay and asked the board to delay the scheduled Annual General Meeting.

Not only this, Rani has also made many shocking claims about Sunjay’s death, and it has raised many eyebrows due to the gravity of the serious claims. She not only demanded a closure on her son’s death, but also alleged that she was forced to sign important documents behind closed doors. As per her, the documents are used to destroy the family’s legacy.

After Sunjay Kapur's demise, reports claimed that his sisters might take forward his Rs. 31,000 crore business, Sona Comstar. However, Sunjay's third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, was appointed as the non-executive director of the company, while Mark Jeffery became the chairman. Rani Kapur is the largest shareholder of Sona Group

Rani Kapur is the widow of late Surinder Kapur, who founded the Sona Group with 16 plants across India. He was an eminent industrialist and a driving force of the Indian automotive component industry. Surinder Kapur was involved in Maruti Suzuki’s localisation. However, after his death in 2015, his son, Sunjay Kapur, took over Sona BLW Precision Forgings.

While he was the MD of Sona Comstar, his mother, Rani Kapur, was the Chairperson of the company. Rani was the sole beneficiary of her husband’s company. Not just this, she is the largest shareholder in Sona BLW and owns 72 shares in the company.

What are the allegations laid by Rani Kapur?

In a letter dated July 24, 2025, addressed to the board of Sona Comstar, Rani Kapur described Sunjay Kapur’s passing as ‘highly suspicious and unexplained.’ Rani alleged that despite repeated requests, she had been denied access to proper documentation and answers surrounding the incident that resulted in her son’s death.

Rani Kapur also stated that she hasn't given her consent to anyone to be appointed as a member of the board of directors of the firm. She went on to reveal that she has been living off mercy after her son's demise, and she has been denied access to all of her accounts. 

In an interview with ANI, Rani Kapur stated that she has no idea about what happened to her son, Sunjay and demanded closure on the same. Talking about the family legacy, she stated:

“I still don't know what happened to my son. I am old now and need closure before I go. I may be old and frail now, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona (Sona Comstar) was set up is strong. I remember the early days of Sona (Sona Comstar), built with care, sacrifice and love. I am here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on as my husband always wanted to be."

Sona Comstar denied Rani Kapur’s allegations

The company called Rani Kapur’s allegations "baseless" and "legally untenable," and also ascertained that she has no standing in its affairs. The company also clarified that the letter that Rani wrote was received on the evening of July 24, and after taking legal advice, the company found no reason to delay the AGM. The official statement could be read as:

“Mrs. Rani Kapur has had no role, direct or indirect, in Sona Comstar since at least 2019. She is neither a shareholder, director, nor officer of the Company. As such, she has no locus standi on any matter related to the Company. Any insinuation that she was coerced into signing documents or that her consent is required for Company affairs is completely baseless and legally untenable.”

Sunjay Kapur’s untimely demise

It was on June 12, 2025, when Sunjay passed away in the UK while playing Polo. According to an India Today report, Sunjay fell on the ground while playing and swallowed a bee. The bee stung his throat, due to which he had a heart attack. When the official statement was released, it was revealed that Sunjay had passed away due to a heart attack. His last rites took place in Delhi.
