Ladakh climate activist, Sonam Wangchuk, has been hogging the limelight after he got released from the Jodhpur Central Jail, after six months. For the unversed, Sonam Wangchuk got arrested and detained back in September 2025. This was after protests in Ladakh erupted over the demand for stronger constitutional protections for the region. 

Wangchuk, who was conducting a peaceful protest and speaking of climate-focused campaigns, became the voice of the demands. The political unrest was linked to him, and he got arrested. Well, Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, stood by him. She had also gone to the Jodhpur Central Jail to speak to Sonam, a famous engineer and innovator.

Sonam Wangchuk and his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, once sat down for an interview with Brut and revealed that they had met Sonam at an education conference. She revealed that she saw a lot of similarity in how both of them wanted to work in the field of education and in life in general. In the words of Gitanjali:

"We met at a conference, an education conference. It was so interesting to see that we were finishing each other's sentences. There was so much similarity in the way we wanted to work in the field of education and life in general. Most people in this world are busy with their lives. It is about their own livelihoods. For me, it was always about living for a cause larger than yourself, and when I met him, it was like finding a soul."

Gitanjali further revealed in the interview that the only woman he loved most in his life is his mother, and he finds Gitanjali just like his mom. She revealed that there are many similarities, but no relationship is devoid of differences, especially when she is the eldest in her generation, and he is the youngest in his. He is trained to be a brat and a role model. Gitanjali revealed that she was used to a lot of chivalry and was used to men carrying her laptop bag. Sonam revealed that she is a black belt in karate, and it was a privilege when he carried it for her. Gitanjali also shared that, as a practising Hindu, she fasts on Mondays. Sonam does it with her, and she revealed that even in Jodhpur jail, he used to fast on Mondays. The couple loves travelling, hiking and also watching movies together.

Gitanjali J Angmo, according to a report by the New Indian Express, had travelled to Jodhpur to meet Wangchuk in jail. This was their first interaction since Sonam's arrest. Gitanjali had visited the jail with advocate Ritam Khare and, on social media, had spoken about his mental and emotional state. Gitanjali, a strong lady, in her tweet dated October 8, 2025, spoke about the legal strategy she planned to use. Her tweet read:

"Met @Wangchuk66 today with @RitamKhare and got the detention order, which we will challenge. His spirit is undaunted. His commitment resolute! His resilience intact! He conveys heartfelt thanks to all for their support and solidarity."

Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has created a reputation for herself with her work in community development, education and with her varied nation-building activities. Gitanjali has a voice of her own, and a user sympathised with her when Gitanjali's husband, Sonam, was in jail. The user told Gitanjali sorry that as a nation they have failed to protect, Sonam. The hard-hitting comment read:

"Those who raise their voice for justice today face consequences in the form of jails, raids and fabricated FIRs. Yet, our resolve as firm believers in the rule of law and the Constitution of India remains unshaken. Together, we shall ensure that justice prevails and Mr. Sonam Wangchuk returns home soon. My heartfelt prayers are with you and your family."

A netizen seeing Gitanjali's waving support for Sonam had written, "Glad to hear.. Let the truth win or triumph in the end!! Satyamev Jayate. Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, was born in Balasore in Odisha. She comes from a Punjabi Jain family, and her upbringing has shaped her interest in social development right from a very young age. Gitanjali J Angmo took a degree in Physics from Fakir Mohan University, reportedly before she did management studies. She also has an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Xavier Institute Of Management, Bhubaneswar.
