Indian billionaire and media proprietor, Kalanithi Maran, is a popular name in the business circles. The chairman of Sun Group owns many television channels, newspapers, DTH Services, radio stations, cricket teams and a production house. Many people don’t know that apart from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kalanithi also owns Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa's T20 league.
Owner of one of the biggest production houses, Sun Pictures, he has produced some of the biggest blockbusters like Jailer, Beast, Thiruchitrambalam, Enthiran, Petta, and many more. The business tycoon is currently leading the headlines for a two-decade-long feud with his brother, Dayanidhi Maran. As per multiple reports, a legal dispute emerged between the Maran brothers after DMK MP and former Telecom Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, sent a notice to his elder brother Kalanithi Maran, over alleged financial irregularities.
However, the management of Sun TV issued a statement regarding the same and alleged that the matter dates back 22 years, when Sun TV was a closely held private limited company. However, the reports had put the Maran brothers in the limelight. If Kalanithi Maran is the leading name behind Sun TV, then his wife, Kavery Kalanithi, is the pillar of the company.
Kalanithi Maran launched Sun TV Network in 1993, and the media house currently runs 37 television channels, reaching over 140 million households across India. In June 2024, it expanded its presence with the launch of a Hindi general entertainment channel, Sun Neo. Kalanithi Maran’s wife, Kavery Maran, is the Executive Director at Sun TV Network and oversees content.
Ever since her marriage to Kalanithi Maran, Kavery took command of Sun TV in 1993 and extended its arms across India. In an interview with Business Today, she spoke about her role in the company and said:

“As our reach went beyond Tamil Nadu and covered the whole of South India, my role became larger. Then, as the footprint extended into other parts of the world, where the south Indian diaspora lived, my job has only become more challenging, rewarding, and exciting.”
Kavery’s aim has always been to extend Sun TV’s viewership beyond South. The network has a presence in Bengali and Marathi as well. Kavery is also one of the highest-paid executive directors in the country. Under her leadership, the Sun Group has made many significant investments in the Hindi-speaking market. As per a report in DNA, Kavery took home a salary of around Rs. 87 crores in FY 2021.
When Kalanithi Maran went to the US for an MBA, he was awestruck by the number of television channels there as compared to India, which only had Doordarshan. In 1993, he founded Sun TV, and by 2006, the network was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, raising 133 million USD for 10 per cent of the share capital.
Under his leadership, Sun TV became the most successful network in South India. Sun TV is the first channel in the country to set up its own earth station. Ranked as the 83rd richest Indian, Kalanithi Maran’s net worth stands at 2.8 billion USD.
Kalanithi Maran and Kavery Kalanithi are the heart and soul of Sun Network and the highest-paid executive duo in India.
