She is the daughter of Edward O. Welles, a Foreign Service officer. Parmelee completed her schooling at the Madeira School and later graduated from Smith College in 1970. She began her career as a technical staff member in the arts at the American Place Theater in New York. Simultaneously, Parmelee made a brief acting appearance in films such as They All Laughed. 

But despite her early connection to the industry, she eventually stepped away from it after marriage. Instead, she and James spent most of their married lives living together in New York. They bonded over common interests, such as Parmelee's active involvement in local historical preservation efforts and participation in community projects. Unlike other celebrity spouses, she kept a low public profile and rarely appeared with her husband at events or in the media.

James Tolkan and Parmelee's love story began in the early 1970s when they first met while working at a theater. According to records, they married on August 28, 1971 in Lake Placid. Although they did not have any kids, they shared a strong bond through their love for animals. The actor found success in the industry, he often said how his initial days was not easy, when Parmelee stood by him. In his words:

"I didn't know what I was getting into when I arrived in New York... my money ran out. It was a semi-nomadic life, but it was full of promise. The only requirement was to stay in the game until the planets aligned." 

James Tolkan's final years and cause of death 

James Tolkan had gradually stepped back from his high-pressure acting career in his later life. According to IMDb and other reports, he called himself "semi-retired" after 2015 and worked on only selective roles. He was last seen in Bone Tomahawk in 2015 and made only a few appearances at fan and community events afterward. Instead, he spent most of his Lake Placid taking part in folk art and local activities. James passed away peacefully in March 2026 at his home in New York. But the specific cause behind his death was not revealed.
