Hema Sareen Mohan is a dedicated and motivated public servant and a nonprofit leader with over 20 years of experience in social justice, education reform and immigrant rights. While she is often recognised as the wife of YouTube CEO, Neal Mohan, Hema has built a remarkable career of her own, focusing on making a positive impact in communities across the United States.

Hema Sareen Mohan's personal life

Hema was born and raised in New York. She pursued her passion for public policy and social justice from an early age. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hunter College, followed by a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University. Her academic background laid the foundation for a career dedicated to public service and advocacy. 

Hema is married to Neal Mohan, who was the Chief Product Officer of YouTube from 2018-2023 and he is the CEO of YouTube after that, succeeding Susan Wojcicki. The couple has 3 children - 2 sons and 1 daughter. 

Hema Sareen Mohan's career in public service and as a poet

Hema started her career at the Vera Institute of Justice in New York. There, she worked for seven years, creating programs to help school police officers handle student behaviour in positive ways. She also worked on projects that offered better solutions than detention for immigrants facing deportation.

Then, she worked in the California State Senate and County of Santa Clara for ten years. During her time, Hema helped develop an important law. This law changed the starting age for kindergarten in California’s public schools. Because of this change, a new program called transitional kindergarten was created, which is like a special extra year for younger children, helping them get ready for regular kindergarten when they are a little older. Apart from this, Hema is also a poet. She has published her poems and was recently a finalist for the San Mateo County Poet Laureate title.

In April 2025, Hema and Neal attended the 11th Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, an event also known as ‘Oscars of Science’, at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, celebrating advancements in science and mathematics. Hema and Neal are known to keep a low public profile. They rarely share details about their private life. However, their selective public appearances, especially at events like these, show their commitment to using their platforms and resources for meaningful causes.

Who is Neal Mohan?

Neal Mohan is the CEO of YouTube, since February 2023. He was born in 1973 in Lafayette, Indiana and spent a part of his childhood in Lucknow, India, before returning to the U.S. He got his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and an MBA from Stanford University. He started his career at Accenture, then joined NetGravity, which was later acquired by DoubleClick. After DoubleClick's acquisition by Google in 2007, he became a key figure in Google's advertising business. At YouTube, he served as Chief Product Officer before becoming CEO, overseeing the launch of YouTube Music, YouTube TV, and YouTube Shorts.
