Meet Faizan Zaki, A 13-Year-Old Boy, Won 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee, Won USD 50,000 Cash

Faizan Zaki, a 7th-grade boy from Texas, yet again proved if there is a will, there is a way. For the unversed, Faizan was the fifth runner-up in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. However, this year, he made an astonishing comeback and won the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee by spelling a French word. Not only did he win the prestigious Scripps Cup on the finale night on May 30, 2025, but Faizan also won a USD 50,000 cash prize.

Who is Faizan Zaki?

Faizan is a resident of Dallas, Texas with origins in Hyderabad. Recently, the 13-year-old Faizan, became the champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee by spelling a French word, éclaircissement. Faizan is in his 7th grade and is a student at C.M. Rice Middle School in Dallas, Texas. Faizan was born to Arshia Quadri and Zaki Anwar and has a twin sister, Zara Jabeen.

The 13-year-old boy began his journey with Scripps National Spelling Bee back in 2019, when he was at the mere age of 7. In 2019, he could secure the 370th rank with a tie. In 2023, he advanced and secured the 21st rank with a tie. In 2025, it was his fourth attempt after his near win back in 2024. According to a report by Mathrubhumi, along with spelling, Faizan has various interests, including playing online games, spending a good amount of time with his friends, speed-solving Rubik’s Cubes and playing an instrument, viola.

As per a report by The New York Times, Faizan’s mom, Arshia, shared how his son, Faizan, started reading at the mere of 2. By the age of 3, Faizan memorised all the names of the countries in the world and their capitals. In fact, when Faizan was just 4 years old, friends and acquaintances started suggesting schools for Faizan to get admitted to.

Do you know how much Faizan Zaki earned from the Scripps National Spelling Bee?

According to a report by CNN, Faizan got a USD 50,000 cash prize this year. Last year, he got a second prize and the amount was USD 25,000. As per a report by ETimes, Faizan will also receive an additional cash prize of USD 2,500 and a set of reference books from Scripps National Spelling Bee’s dictionary partner, Merriam Webster. So, after seeing the amounts, it is quite obvious that Faizan has earned USD 77,500 from the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an event held in the US. It is an annual spelling bee, where the major participants are from the United States but various countries including The Bahamas, Canada, China, India, Ghana, Japan, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria and New Zealand. The global event started back in 1925. They have been keeping the longtime legacy by organising the event every year except 1943 to 1945 due to World War II and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
