Meet Carl Pei: The Man Behind Nothing And The Game-Changing Nothing Gallery Update In India

Carl Pei is a new face in the world of technology, who is already generating a lot of buzz among people. He is known for bringing a new and fresh perspective to smartphone design. He first gained popularity as the co-founder of OnePlus and now he is getting even more love for his company, Nothing. 

After leaving OnePlus, Carl started his own company, Nothing, in 2021. His main idea was to make technology exciting once again for people and with this idea, he launched amazing products like the transparent Phone (1) and Ear (1), focusing mostly on design and user-friendly experience. Recently, he announced the Nothing Gallery 2.0 update, which brings powerful photo and video editing tools. The announcement was just in time as Nothing's next big leap in the smartphone world, Phone (3) is all set to be launched.

Carl Pei’s early life

Carl Pei was born in Beijing, China, in 1989. His family later moved to the United States and then settled in Sweden, where he spent most of his youth. While growing up, Carl Pei became strongly interested in technology. He often used to experiment with gadgets and was updated with all the latest trends. He was one of the early users of the iPod and iPhone. His early exposure built the foundation of curiosity in him about the tech industry. Later, he went to study economics at Stockholm School of Economics but dropped out to follow his passion for consumer electronics. 

Carl Pei’s journey towards OnePlus

In 2010, Carl stepped into the world of technology by doing internships and roles at companies like Nokia and Meizu. His career took a turn when he joined Oppo, where he met Pete Lau and together they co-founded OnePlus in 2013. Their main idea was to create premium smartphones at an affordable price. Carl led the marketing and product strategy department and under his leadership, OnePlus launched OnePlus One in 2014, which became a major hit. They sold nearly a million units of it in the first year itself. Carl's clever marketing skills helped OnePlus become a global name. 

Carl Pei launched his company, Nothing

In 2020, Carl Pei made a bold decision to leave OnePlus because he started to feel dissatisfied with the mundane and uninspiring tech landscape. In January 2021, he founded his own company, Nothing in London, which was supported by investors like iPod creator Tony Fadell and YouTuber, Casey Neistat. From day 1 in Nothing, his mission was to bring transparency into technology, both literally and philosophically. Carl often describes his company, Nothing as "Christmas Morning" in technology because it is an attempt to bring back the joy and excitement in customers towards technology. He only aims to reshape how and what people feel about technology. 

Their first product was Ear (1), which shocked the entire tech market with its transparent design. It brought back the excitement among customers. But for the company, this is just the beginning. In 2022, Nothing launched its first smartphone, the Phone (1), which went against the traditional design and opted for a transparent back and the Glyph Interface. After this came Phone (2) and Phone (2a), which stood out amongst all the other smartphones in the market. 

Nothing gallery update

With the launch of Phone 3 coming soon, Carl Pei revealed Nothing Gallery 2.0, which is a major software upgrade. The update introduces tools for photos and video. Users can now crop, rotate, apply 12-level colour grading, adjust tone curves, and choose from 10 filters. For video editing, one can trim, adjust volume and has a slow-motion control in it. Performance will also have a boost. Camera-to-gallery transitions are now 20% faster, and image processing is up to 25% quicker. Most importantly, all edits happen locally, with no cloud uploads, forced login or any subscription. As far as the Nothing Phone 3 is concerned, it is all set and it will be launched on July 1, 2025.
