Anne Burrell's journey from a pen to a pan

Anne Burrell was born on September 21, 1969, in Cazenovia, a small incorporated town in Madison County, New York. The young Anne attended Canisius College in Buffalo; however, her degree was not in culinary arts but English and Communications. Yes! The culinary marvel graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communications in 1991. It was a year later that she enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America, where she completed her degree in 1996 with an A.O.S. (Associate of Occupational Studies). 

The course unlocked Anne Burrell's love for cooking and culinary arts, which led her to her next destination, Italy. The chef studied at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners (ICIF) in Asti in the Piedmont region. It was only after her experience at the ICIF that she was officially able to begin her journey as a true creator. 

Anne Burrell's culinary journey

Anne Burrell worked in a number of restaurants for the first nine months after completing her course in Italy. She worked at La Bottega del '30, a small restaurant in Tuscany with one seating each night. She mastered the culinary arts and soon returned to the United States as a sous chef at Felidia. The restaurant was owned by the celebrity chef, Lidia Bastianich, giving Anne ample opportunity to expand her horizons. After that, she worked at Savoy as a chef and catered a prix fixe to a small dinning. However, free-flowing through her culinary journey, Anne Burrell soon returned to the Institute of Culinary Education, only this time, as a teacher.

Anne Burrell was soon named as the chef for Italian Wine Merchants by Linda Bastianich's son and restaurateur, Joseph Bastianich, and Chef Mario Batali. For the unversed, Italian Wine Merchant was the duo's New York wine store. Anne later became the executive chef of Centro Vinoteca and left the restaurant in 2008 due to her overly busy schedule. This exit, however, cost Anne her chance at Gusto Ristorante as both were a part of Mangia Hospitality Group. Anne planned on opening her own restaurant, Phil & Anne's Good Time Lounge, in Brooklyn in 2017, but it was also closed by April 2018.

Anne Burrell's engagements and marriage

As Anne Burrell became a well-known name, her fans' interest in her personal life began to gain traction. While she was able to keep everything under cover, her first relationship with her girlfriend, chef Koren Grieveson, went public in 2012 after cookbook author Ted Allen outed her on a radio show. However, Anne denied the same, and shared that she has never kept her sexuality a secret.

Anne publicly tweeted about her engagement to Koren in December 2012. Unfortunately, their engagement never saw the wedding. By 2018, Anne was dating Stuart Claxton, and in April 2020, they were engaged. The duo got married in October 2021. While there are no records of her having a child, her husband had a son, Javier Claxton, from his previous marriage.

Anne Burrell's television career took off with the premiere of Iron Chef America. The chef was Mario Batali's sous chef in the show. However, she is no one's side character, and she soon started to gain the attention of the viewers with her signature blonde spiked hair and boundless energy, outshining the 'Iron Chef' Mario himself. In 2008, she returned to TV with Food Network. They offered her the lead role in Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which showcased professional kitchen techniques. The show became one of the most loved series, returning for a magnificent nine-season run. 

Anne became not only a much-loved face in many households but also a saviour for several confused home cooks. She later became the co-host of Worst Cooks in America, a fan favourite show where she combined her culinary knowledge with tough love and on-point wit. She helped several transform complete kitchen disasters into competent cooks. She also graced programmes like Chopped, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, and Food Network Star, always bringing her trademark mix of sass and skill.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, her step-son, Javier, her mother, Marlene, and sister, Jane, her children Isabella, Amelia and Nicolas, and her brother Ben.
