MBA Woman Demands 12 Cr, BWM As Alimony For Ending 18 Months Marriage, CJI Grills 'Khud Kama Ke..'

Divorces and alimonies have been used in parallel with weddings for several years. In the present time, 'alimony' has become a gossip, as it raises questions about men's security in society. Alimony is a fixed amount of money that a husband needs to pay to his wife for maintenance and other reasons, such as aid. However, the increasing demands from women over the last few years have also grabbed attention and sparked a wide range of debate. Another similar case happened recently, when a woman, who, herself is well-qualified for an IT job, demanded excessive amounts from her estranged husband.

During the hearing of a divorce case recently, the bench questioned the woman's demand for Rs. 12 crore along with a flat in Mumbai and a BMW car, which was also for a wedding that lasted for only 18 months. Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gava told the woman that while she is educated herself, she shouldn't ask for all these and rather try to earn what she wants. The woman was asked why she doesn't work, even after holding an MBA and experience in the Banking sector. The CJI told the woman:

"You are so educated. You should not have to ask, you should earn for yourself. Aap itni padhi-likhi hain. Aapko khudko maangna nahi chahiye, aur khud kama ke khana chahiye."

MBA woman demands Rs. 12 crore with a flat, BMW for divorce settlement for ending an 18-month marriage

The woman, who demanded a flat, encumbrances, a one-time settlement of Rs. 12 crore, and a BWM, further argued that her husband is 'very rich'. The lawyers of the man clarified that the husband actually had a good income from 2015 to 2026, when he received a package of Rs. 2-3 crore per annum with a Rs. 1 crore bonus, which has since significantly dropped. Thus, providing the excessive things she wants would not be possible. The husband reportedly claimed that the woman has been suffering from schizophrenia, which she denied. The woman further claimed that she would find it difficult to secure a job once a contempt case was lodged against her by her estranged husband.

The marriage of the said couple lasted for 18 months, and while the wife filed for maintenance, the husband moved for annulment, citing his concerns for his wife's mental health condition. After long years of legal battle, the case was moved to the upper court. During the hearing, questions were raised about the woman's unwillingness to work even after holding lucrative experience and skills. The bench questioned:

"You are an IT person. You have done your MBA. You are in demand…Bengaluru, Hyderabad… Why don’t you work?"

The woman cited a case that was lodged against her by her husband, which was hindering her job opportunities. On the other hand, the lawyers from the husband's side claimed that the woman already has a flat with two parking slots, and the BMW she was asking for is years old and has already been scrapped. To this, the bench asked the woman to go with a flat worth only Rs. 4 crore as a settlement. As per the court's order to the woman:
