A mother-daughter relationship is one of the most precious and pure bonds one can ever find. The dynamics shift every now and then between a mother and a daughter, just like veteran actress, Neena Gupta and her fashion designer daughter, Masaba Gupta. Apart from her fashion game, Masaba is also making her mark with her appearances in showbiz, be it her stint as a judge on the fashion reality show, Supermodel Of The Year or her spectacular acting in her debut series, Masaba Masaba.
For the unversed, in the 1980s, Masaba Gupta's mother and veteran actress, Neena Gupta had met West Indies cricketer, Vivian Richards in Mumbai and had fallen head-over-heels in love with him. However, both Neena and Vivian knew that their wedding wasn't possible because he was already a married man. Despite this, the two had continued their relationship for many years. However, when Neena had discovered that she was pregnant, the actress had taken the courageous decision to give birth to her child as a single mother and had named her Masaba Gupta.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Masaba Gupta praised her mother, Neena Gupta's can-do attitude and opened up about how she takes inspiration from her. Masaba shared that her mother's spirit of not giving up is the most important thing she has learned from her. Revealing what she has imbibed from her mother for life, Masaba said:
"Just keep going. I think she has a ‘Never say die’ spirit. I was just telling Sid in the car that she's a survivor. You know, she's someone who's 67 years old, and she's just about starting again, you know. So, I think that age is just a number, and that you should never give up, and never say die. I think that's the one thing I've learned from her."
Further in the interview, when Masaba was asked if her mother's negative experiences in her love life ever impacted her perception about love, the doting daughter mentioned that she believes that "kids should never take on the baggage of their parents." She added:
"Even though she went through whatever she went through, there was always an underlying feeling of gratitude. It's something that I don't think any of us have ever spoken about but there was a serious feeling that but we're so grateful for everything we have, because there was food on the table, there were friends to celebrate our life with. There was work, financially we were sound, and our health was good. So there was always this underlying feeling that we don't have one thing, but we have everything else."

Masaba recalled that she had faced constant bullying by the kids at her school and shared that it had caused her issues with how she looked. Masaba recalled a particularly embarrassing incident and said that she had used a foundation from her mother's makeup kit to lighten the colour of her skin. However, she hadn't realised how it had looked because she had kept her bathroom dark to avoid looking at her skin colour. Sharing the details, she said:
“I remember when I would step out for school around in the 8th grade. What I did was I picked up my mom's foundation one day, I quietly went into her makeup kit and I said let me try her foundation and just make myself look lighter. I did that, and I obviously didn't realise that it's not the colour of my skin. And I went to school, and everyone has obviously figured it out. Because I used to never put on the light in my bathroom, it would be dark because I didn't want to look at my skin. So with the lights off, I would conceal my scars whatever I could see, and they were literally like against my dark skin, they were like white spots."
Masaba Gupta and her mother, Neena Gupta were seen together on the screen in the OTT series, Masaba Masaba, which had aired on Netflix in August 2020. The audience had witnessed the fun banter with the daughter-mother duo as the series had recreated some real-life incidents from their lives. Masaba and Neena dote on each other and support each other's decisions.
On the work front, Neena Gupta will be next seen in the film, Uunchai.
