Promised Call That Never Came, AI171 Cabin Crew Maithili Patil Assured Dad She'd Call From London

In a historic tragedy, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flight no. AI171, en route to London, crashed in a few minutes after its take-off. The horrific incident took place near Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport on June 12, 2025. It has claimed the lives of 241 passengers onboard, including 12 crew members. Different heartfelt stories about those who lost their lives have come up, and among others, the last call of cabin crew, Maithili Patil, has left netizens emotional. 

Cabin crew member Maithili Patil had promised her father she'd call after landing

Among the 265 families which have been left devastated, the Patil family from Nhava village in Maharashtra are dealing with significant heartbreak. Their daughter, Maithili Patil, aged 23, a young and spirited flight attendant who was on duty on the ill-fated Air India AI171 fight, has passed away. She joined the airline company nearly two years ago, after a lot of hard work to fulfil her dream of chasing the skies. Maithili was the daughter of an ONGC labour contractor and overcame hurdles with her dedication to carve a path of success.

A relative and former sarpanch of the village, Jitendra Mhatre, who knew Maithili and her father, revealed to the media that she was excited and talked to her father, Moreshwar Patil, before boarding the ill-fated flight. Since she was on the flight headed to London, she promised her father minutes before take-off that she would call after landing for the more than nine-hour long flight. However, after the tragedy, that call never came. A villager said:

"She was our pride, a source of inspiration for all girls in our village. Her achievements gave us immense joy."

Several dreams and stories of Air India cabin crew remained unfulfilled

Apart from Maithili, there were nine cabin crew members with two pilots onboard. The young team on the flight had several dreams, stories and promises which would now remain unfulfilled. Among them was Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who had an experience of 8,200 flying hours. He told his elderly father that he would leave the job to look after him but before could do so, he passed away. On the other hand, the first operating officer, Clive Kunder, was also a dedicated aviator from Mumbai. Also, Roshni Songhare, a cabin crew member was a travel influencer with 54,000 Instagram followers in Dombivli was onboard that flight.

What happened to Air India AI171 scheduled from Ahmedabad to London?

An ill-fated flight, Air India AI171, which happened to be a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took-off from Ahmedabad airport at 1:30 pm and was in the air for a few minutes before it started to descend and crashed into a nearby doctor's hostel. Flame engulfed within minutes after the crash, claiming 241 lives and other people who were present in the building. While those injured are still being treated, the authorities have formed multiple teams with experts from India and abroad to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, Tata Group, which operates Air India, has announced a compensation of Rs. 1 crore for the passengers who lost their lives. At the same time, it will bear the cost of those injured and get the now destroyed doctor's hostel rebuilt again.
