Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra hit the big screens on August 28, 2025, and created a storm on the internet. The movie is monumental in the Malayalam film industry because it pioneers the superhero genre with an indigenous, female-led protagonist. Kalyani Priyadarshan played the lead role, and the audience has nothing but praises for the 32-year-old. Fans have taken to social media to express their appreciation for the 'first-of-its-kind' Mollywood movie.
Kalyani Priyadarshan essays the role of the titular character, 'Chandra', in Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra. The character is a mysterious woman who moves to Bangalore. There she comes across various social evils like kidnapping, organ trafficking and more. After 'Chandra' intervenes to protect a colleague from gangsters, a series of events unfolds, revealing her hidden powers and transforming her into a superhero based on Kerala folklore. Kalyani aptly portrayed the amalgamation of Malayalam mythology and fantasy– a genre that hasn't been explored in Mollywood before. Her acting seems natural, and she has even managed to satisfy the discerning cinematic taste of Malayalis.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra sets the stage for a new cinematic universe of Mollywood, introducing 'Chandra's' journey as she fights dark forces while grappling with her own struggles and a powerful, connected enemy. Besides the broader concept of triumph of good over evil, the film also gives equal importance to the protagonist's personal joys and sorrows, making the audience feel connected to her human side.
The path-breaking Mollywood creation was directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Sita Ramam fame, Dulquer Salmaan. Their vision was brought to life through amazing music, VFX and cinematography. These are the departments where Indian superhero films often take a backseat; however, that wasn't the case for Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. Viewers who shared their reviews regarding the film appreciated the camerawork and overall theatrical experience.
One fan wrote, "VFX work. Honestly? It's world-class." They added, "Hats off to Dulquer Salmaan, who not only believed in his vision but delivered one of the best-produced films in the recent memory." Another shared, "I personally thought the vfx was great. And love how they showed the character moving not like other movies where you see the hero jumping like a frog. A third mentioned, "Thanks to dulquer for producing this outstanding film. Hats off to dominic arun, nimish ravi, jakes bijoy, and all other technicians that worked for the film. Extremely excited for the upcoming sequels in this universe."

Praising Kalyani's role, a Redditer wrote, "A visually stunning film with great world-building, strong performances, and terrific cameos. First half sets the stage well, second half is full of action and fun." Another stated, "Takes guts to make such a movie in malayalam, and also pull it off like this!" A third wrote, "A brave attempt and really set a world rooted in Kerala folklore." Others praised the portrayal of the emotional aspect of the movie, which underlies its humorous veneer.
If you are looking for a fantasy thriller, where powerful women and intricate plot take the center stage, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is for you. It will offer you a complete package of light-hearted comedy, superhuman punches, and a portrayal of an ideal society where real problems are dealt with in a fantastic manner. Even with a modest budget of Rs. 30 crore, the film is expected to achieve success similar to Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva. Besides the stellar acting and plot, Kalyani Priyadarshan's captivating visual is an icing on the cake. The other cast, including Naslen (as 'Sunny') and Chandu Salimkumar (as 'Venu'), also impressed with their respective roles.
