Ten Plus Police Investigation In The Kim Soo Hyun And Kim Sae Ron Case: Everything To Know So Far

After finding worldwide fame with the popular K-drama series, Queen Of Tears, Kim Soo Hyun found himself embroiled in a controversy just a few months later. Korean actress, Kim Sae Ron, had died by suicide, and many fingers were pointed at the actor, accusing him of dating her as a minor, putting debts on her and whatnot. Though the case has remained unsolved, South Korea's police force has launched an extensive investigation into the matter. Here is everything that has happened so far in the case. 

Kim Soo Hyun is being investigated on whether he dated Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor 

After Korean actress Kim Sae Ron died by suicide in 2025, a Korean YouTube Hoverlab accused actor, Kim Soo Hyun of dating the actress when she was a minor. As per the YouTuber, she was 15 years old, while the Queen Of Tears actor was 27 years old at the time. Kim Sae Ron's family have presented audio recordings as proof and alleged that Kim Soo Hyun had a relationship with her when she was only 15. 

Kim Soo Hyun has filed a defamation case against a YouTube channel that released the audio recordings 

The late actress, Kim Sae Ron's family had filed a complaint that Kim Soo Hyun had violated the Child Welfare Act by allegedly dating the actress when she was below the age of consent. They had also released the audio recordings to the public as proof with the help of a YouTube channel known as Garo Sero Institute. The accused actor has filed a counter-complaint and accused the channel of defamation and stalking. Kim Soo Hyun's team has also stated that the audio was altered using artificial intelligence.

Kim Soo Hyun and his team had first denied the actor having any relationship with Kim Sae Ron, when the actress had posted an intimate photo of them together. However, after her death, more and more evidence came forward, the actor's team stated that the two had briefly dated when she was 20 years old and the actor was 31. However, Kim Sae Ron's family recently revealed a recording of the actress with an anonymous informant, where she was heard saying: 

“I dated Soo-hyun. You might say I'm crazy and not believe me, but I dated him since I was in middle school, and we broke up after I went to college.”

Kim Sae Ron said that they dated when she was in middle school, which would make her around 14 or 15 at the time. During this time, Kim Soo Hyun also enlisted in the Korean army and wrote letters to her. The contents of the letters did not have anything directed towards a romantic relationship, but the actor had written 'I miss you'. Kim Soo Hyun's team said that it was a common statement that many soldiers wrote when writing to friends. Many netizens found a grown man writing 'I Miss You' to a minor girl very strange.

Kim Sae Ron's family has requested police protection and informant was attacked by assailants 

Rumours were rife that after presenting the audio recordings to the public, the anonymous informant, who is based in the USA, had been assaulted. Kim Sae Ron's family also requested police protection for the family after allegedly noticing suspicious vehicles near the late actress' aunt's house. No information has been revealed regarding police protection but the Consulate General in New York has stated that there are no records of any citizen assaulting a Korean citizen. 

Kim Soo Hyun and his agency have been accused of toxic behaviour by past audio recordings

Kim Soo Hyun is the founder of the Gold Medallist talent agency. Kim Sae Ron was a part of this agency and had reportedly said to the anonymous informant that both the agency and the actor are 'really scary and will do anything'. The actress had also gotten into a drinking and driving crash and incurred many fines for the damages. Kim Soo Hyun had allegedly put a huge debt on her even though he knew that she was in a bad financial condition after paying the fines.

As per the audio recording, Kim Soo Hyun had also sent the late actress a photo while he was with another woman, talking about it Kim Sae Ron had said to the informant: 

"What's really crazy is that he sent me a photo taken while he was doing 'it' with someone else. He said the idol he slept with smells like miyeok (seaweed) so he had her name saved as 'miyeok' in his phone and sent me that. If I was in better circumstances, I would've revealed everything already." 

Kim Soo Hyun has filed seven legal complaints, and Kim Sae Ron's side has filed three

In a press briefing, the Seoul Metropolitan Police force revealed that actor, Kim Soo Hyun has filed seven legal complaints. Kim Sae Ron's family has filed three, but their accusation of both actors being in a relationship while Kim Sae Ron was a minor is the most serious complaint. The lawyer of the bereaving family has also been reported to the National Human Rights Council of Korea for reportedly giving wrong legal advice. The controversy between Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron has now transformed into a legal battle with ongoing police investigations.
