Rapper, Kanye West's controversial life is not new to tabloid headlines. But fans are about to get a new perspective on him as the teaser of an upcoming documentary, In Whose Name? has been released, which focuses on his mental health struggles. Made by filmmaker, Nico Ballestros, it offers a behind-the-scenes coverage from six years of his life where he dealt with big highs and devastating lows.
However, the limelight has fallen on how his mental health struggles contributed to the crack in his marriage with Kim Kardashian. In the first teaser, Kim is seen teary-eyed as she tells him, "Your personality was not like this a few years ago," to which Kanye confessed that he had stopped his medication for five months. While the show is about to give an angle into the power couple's separation, here's what led to one of the biggest divorces in the USA.
Kim and Kanye's love story began long before they said 'I do'. The duo first met in the early 2000s when Kim was friends with singer Brandy, and Kanye was producing music. Their meeting didn't develop into anything, and she ended the knot with Kris Humphries. After her separation, they reconnected at his Paris fashion show. She soon fell "madly in love" the moment she landed in the city that marked the beginning of her romance with Kanye. He famously got her wardrobe revamped, which left the fans divided. Recalling her second meeting with him, Kim told Seacrest:
"He jokes that he put on this whole fashion show just to get a date with me. So, I went there, and I stayed with him, and that's where we started dating. I swear from the moment I landed, I fell madly in love with him, and I thought, 'Oh my god, why didn't I do this sooner?' Like, this is what real life is like, love and fun and real support."
The duo soon made their relationship public, and their love-filled interviews, PDA, and him dedicating a song to her didn't go unnoticed. They welcomed their first daughter and tied the knot in a grand 2014 wedding in Florence, Italy. They welcomed four children together: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. But even fairy tales have shadows. The couple's bond got strained due to Kanye's frequent Twitter rants, polarising statements, and Kim's terrifying Paris robbery incident. Kim and Kanye even dealt with the latter's hospitalisation due to exhaustion in 2016 and subsequent bipolar disorder diagnosis. However, despite renewing their vows in 2019, The Sun reported that things went downhill for their marriage.
In the following years, Kim Kardashian was facing challenges in dealing with Kanya's multiple controversies, including his political beliefs and public feud with Taylor Swift. The strain was visible in 2020 when Kanye's repeated erratic public behaviour, including a presidential campaign and a clash in his family made headlines. Soon, TMZ reported that Kim and Kanye tried to stay together for their kids, sought counselling, but it didn't work. So, they filed for divorce in 2021, which was finalised a year later. Sharing her thoughts on dealing with the chaos and the media scrutiny, Kim once wrote on Instagram:
"I've never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye's right to privacy when it comes to his health. I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this."

After moving on in their individual lives, Kim has been single, while Kanye has married Bianca Censori. But in 2025, the rapper released a song featuring his daughter North with Sean Combs. It created a dispute between Kim and Kanye related to their kids' trademarks. Kim had trademarked their children's names, allegedly to protect them, but Kanye accused her of blocking the song. She insisted the names would revert to the kids at 18. The disagreement spilt online, reigniting tensions. However, the former couple did put on a show together for North's Lion King performance.
Despite all the ups and downs, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have continued to co-parent their kids leaving aside their differences for them.
