Sunjay Kapur's Death Brings Back Karisma Kapoor's Old Allegation, Said, 'He Married Me For Fame...'

Businessman, Sunjay Kapur, the former husband of Bollywood actress, Karisma Kapoor and a close friend of Prince William, died suddenly during a polo match in the London, United Kingdom, on June 12, 2025. The incident shocked both the business world and rich polo circles. Sunjay Kapur was 53, when he reportedly collapsed during the match after being stung by a bee. What seemed like a minor accident turned deadly due to a severe allergic reaction.

The news of his death not only brought heartfelt tributes from friends and family but also caused some of his past controversies to resurface, especially Karisma Kapoor’s earlier allegations. As many remembered Sunjay as a kind and generous man, others recalled his disturbed personal life.

Sunjay Kapur’s death incident

On June 12, 2025, Sunjay Kapur was playing a polo match. According to eyewitnesses, he suddenly said, “I’ve swallowed something,” and within minutes, he collapsed on the field. Doctors later confirmed that he had suffered from anaphylactic shock, which is a serious allergic reaction. Later, it was explained that the bee had likely stung the inside of his mouth or throat, causing the airways to swell up. This type of allergic reaction is extremely dangerous because it can block breathing and stop the heart. Although emergency help arrived quickly, Sunjay could not be saved. He died on the spot, leaving everyone in deep shock.

Karisma Kapoor’s old allegations resurface

After Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death, in no time the attention turned towards his marriage with Bollywood actress, Karisma Kapoor. The two were married in 2003 and became parents to two children, but eventually their marriage ended in a messy public divorce in 2016. According to Karisma, she faced both mental and physical torture in the marriage. She had claimed that Sunjay once attempted to ‘auction her’ and forced her to sleep with his friends on their honeymoon. She also mentioned that Sunjay used to hit her, and Karisma used to hide her wounds with makeup. But, when everything crossed a limit, she filed a complaint and headed for divorce. 

One such incident and allegation resurfaced after Sunjay Kapur’s death. It was a moment when their infant son, Kiaan was unwell, but Sunjay allegedly chose to travel and play a polo match with Prince William instead of staying home. This again grabbed media attention after Sunjay’s death, especially considering how often he had been seen with British royals and how deeply involved he was in the polo scene. Karisma Kapoor once said:

"(Sunjay) decided to carry on, leaving me behind to take care of our sick four-month-old son, just to play a Polo match with Prince William. I also realised that he had married me only because I was a famous and successful film star, which would facilitate him to be reported in the press."

Despite several personal controversies, many people remembered Sunjay as a cheerful and generous man. His friends and polo teammates shared that he always had a smile, was full of energy, and never made others feel small. Sona Comstar, the company he led, also released a statement about his death and called him a ‘visionary leader.’ A close friend while talking to PEOPLE said:

"He will be greatly missed not only by his family and friends but the local community around his club, as he employed so many people and made so many friends, he was fun, kind and generous. He didn’t distinguish between his grooms or high net worth friends; he had a party, everyone was invited, and everyone was equal."
