Karisma Kapoor's personal life has been grabbing a whole lot of attention lately, yet again. It so happened that her ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away on June 12, 2025, after he suffered a heart attack. His funeral was held 7 days after his demise. For those who don't know, Karisma was previously in a relationship with Abhishek Bachchan, and their engagement was announced on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday. However, things didn't go well, and after a year, in 2003, their wedding was called off for reasons best known to them. Following this Karisma got married to Sunjay Kapur, while Abhishek tied the knot with Aishwarya Rai.
Ending a relationship is always tough, especially for the engaged couple. Surely, Abhishek and Karisma had their fair share of downs when their wedding was called off. Much later, in an interview with Subhash K Jha, Karisma labelled her experience as 'traumatic'. She thanked the media for being understanding during this tough time in her life.
Karisma Kapoor further expressed her gratitude to her family members, including her parents, sister and buas, for helping her to come out of this traumatic phase of her life. For the unversed, Karisma's aunt, Ritu Nanda, was Shweta Bachchan's mother-in-law, and she helped her niece, Karisma to come out of that tough phase. Yes, you read it right. Ritu Nanda was Nikhil Nanda's mother. Reportedly, she passed away last year, suffering from cancer. In Karisma Kapoor's words:
“I want to thank the media for being so understanding and supportive. Everyone left me alone. I don’t want to say anything more on this except that I couldn’t have come out my trauma if it wasn’t for my parents [Babita and Randhir Kapoor], sister [Kareena], my Dadiji [Krishna Raj Kapoor], my two Buas [Rima Jain and Ritu Nanda] and my close friends."
While it was not revealed exactly when Karisma and Abhishek's relationship began, they reportedly have known each other since their childhood, given that both of their families, the Bachchans and the Kapoors, remained closely intact over the decades. It was in 2002, when during Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday, Karisma and Abhishek's engagement was announced. According to several reports, Jaya Bachchan proudly introduced Karisma as their 'future daughter-in-law' and was visibly emotional while doing the same.
However, it was only after a year that, in 2003, the couple's wedding was called off. No reason for why it happened was ever disclosed by Karisma or Abhishek. However, several reporters hinted at the potential causes which might have ended up breaking Karisma and Abhishek's relationship. While some claimed that it happened due to the differences between Babita Kapoor and the Bachchans, others mentioned that Karisma expressed her wish to continue acting after her marriage, which caused issues. To mention, these reasons were highly speculated through the gossip that circulated around the split, and no one had officially confirmed the same.
