Kapil Sharma is one of India’s most celebrated and highest-paid comedians, who has also earned acclaim as a singer and actor. His charismatic presence and quick wit have earned him a massive international fan base. Over the years, he has headlined popular shows, from Comedy Nights With Kapil to Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show. But his road to success wasn’t easy. Behind the laughter lies a story of modest beginnings, sacrifices, and passion.
Kapil Sharma’s late father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, was a head constable in the Punjab Police and passed away in 2004 after battling cancer. Despite the constraints of his job, Kapil’s father always encouraged him to pursue a career in the arts. In a candid interview on his cousin’s podcast, Kapil shared how his late father saw the artist in him and encouraged him to pursue music. ETimes quoted Kapil as saying:
“My childhood was fine, I was not someone overly excited, I was a normal kid, and my father saw an artist in me. He used to promote me, support me, and encourage me to sing in school events. When I entered college, during my graduation days, whenever I participated in a function or event. I would tell my dad that I did this; he would be really happy.”
Kapil comes from a simple background, where money was tight, but love and support from his parents were always in abundance. The comedian, who is also an exceptional singer, shared that his love for music is a family trait. He fondly remembered his mom, Janak Rani, singing at local ladies’ sangeet events, and now, as a proud producer of his own show, he even gets her to sing on television. In his words:
“My love for singing came from my mom…but she would sing only in ladies' sangeet around the neighbourhood. All my childhood, I have only heard her sing in the sangeets. Now, she knows I have my show on TV…so she would sing a little on the show. But during my childhood, she would take me along for these sangeets… I also had an interest in playing the drums, so she used to take me along. Now, when I started earning decently well, I bought a drum set for myself…my parents have always encouraged me to become an artist.”
Despite his natural flair for creativity, Kapil’s journey as an artist was not just his own, but a continuation of his late father’s dream. The comedian shared how his father was stuck in a ‘thankless’ job that barely left any time for his family, let alone personal dreams. Kapil shared that his father once showed him old photos from his own theatre days, a side that he had never known. Remembering his late father, an emotional Kapil shared:
“My dream of becoming an artist wasn't just mine. It was my father's dream…When he came to my first theatre play, he showed me some pictures of himself where he revealed that he even used to do theatre plays…and I had no idea about it. Whenever I would tell him about my plays and group songs, he would get really happy. He never told me about it, but then when he shared about it, I feel it's their dreams that I have fulfilled.”
Today, Kapil Sharma has it all, and he credits all of it to his parents, whose belief and upbringing made him determined to choose a career he would enjoy every day. What are your thoughts on his journey?
