Indian actress turned politician, Kangana Ranaut, is back with another explosive post, and this time, it is aimed at newly nominated New York City mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair. The Emergency actress took a sharp dig at Mamdani as she reacted to his historic win in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary, alleging that he was a part of the growing trend to ‘wipe out Hinduism.’
After Indian-American socialist Zohran Mamdani’s historic win as the mayoral candidate in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, Kangana Ranaut took to X (formerly Twitter) with a scathing remark on the Indian-American socialist. The actress reshared an old protest video of Mamdani and questioned his identity, accusing him of sounding ‘more Pakistani than Indian’. Her explosive post could be read as:
“His mother is Mira Nair, one of our best filmmakers, Padmashri, a beloved and celebrated daughter born and raised in great Bharat based in Newyork, she married Mehmood Mamdani ( Gujarati origin) a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran, he sounds more Pakistani than Indian ….. whatever happened to his Hindu identity or bloodline and now he is ready to wipe out Hinduism, wow!! It’s the same story everywhere. On a different note, met Mira ji on a couple of occasions. Congratulations to the parents.”
Kangana’s remarks were prompted by a now-viral video from a past protest, allegedly pioneered by Mamdani, where derogatory slogans were reportedly shouted against Hindus and Lord Rama. While Zohran’s direct involvement in using such language remains unclear, the resurfaced footage just after his win had reignited online debate.
Kangana is only one of the many other Indians who are raising their voice against Zohran Mamdani for his alleged involvement in the protest, where public chants were directed as abuses against the entire Hindu community living in New York. Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi also joined in and wrote:
“When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan’s PR team takes the day off. India doesn’t need enemies with ‘allies’ like him shouting fiction from New York.”
33-year-old Zohran Mamdani is an Indian-American democratic socialist born in Uganda, who is also a member of the New York State Assembly. He made headlines this week after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary. If elected in November 2025, he would become New York’s first Muslim and Indian-American mayor.

Zohran, who moved to NYC at the age of seven, is known for his grassroots-level activism and bold agenda, including free childcare and rent freezes. Major figures from the left wing, such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have endorsed him. However, the resurfaced video has sparked major online debates. His progressive credentials and Muslim identity have become focal points of criticism, questioning his allegiance to Indian heritage.
While Mamdani has yet to publicly respond to the criticism and backlash, in his victory speech, he quoted Nelson Mandela as he emphasised the need for unity and progressive governance in the nation, saying:
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
