Kamal Haasan is one of the most popular actors in the South Indian film industry. Since the trailer launch of his film, Thug Life, the 70-year-old actor has landed in trouble one after another. Now, the Tamil star is making headlines after his controversial remark at the audio launch of Thug Life. A pro-Kannada group has also made a police complaint against the actor. According to a report by Mint, Kamal might face a possible ban ahead of his film’s release. Later, the Tamil actor expressed his views on the controversy.
On May 25, 2025, Kamal went to the audio launch event of his upcoming film, Thug Life in Karnataka. During the event, the Tamil actor was sharing the stage with Kannada actor, Shiva Rajkumar. Kamal started his speech by saying a Tamil phrase, "Uyire Urave Tamizhe", which means "My life and my family is Tamil language". Then he went on to say that actor, Shiva Rajkumar and his family live in another state. Addressing Shiva, Kamal said that "Kannada was born out of Tamil". This remark sparked a widespread debate, and the actor landed in trouble. In his words:
"Uyire Urave Tamizhe. Actor Shiva Rajkumar is my family living in another state. That’s why he is here. That’s why when I started my speech, I said, my life and my family is Tamil. Your language was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line."
According to a report by PTI, Karnataka’s Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada organisation led by Praveen Shetty, which dedicatedly protects the cultural heritage of the state, has filed a police complaint against the 70-year-old actor. In the complaint, he mentioned that the controversial remark made by the actor not only hurt the sentiments of the Kannada people but also tried to create a gap between the Kannada and Tamil communities. He was quoted as saying:
"Every time a new Tamil movie is released, they have been constantly hurting the self-respect of Kannadigas. Such statements have been made continuously and have further disrupted peace and order between Kannadigas and Tamils."
According to a report by Hindustan Times, a senior police official said that they have received the complaint but have not yet registered any FIR. He also said that presently, they are seeking legal opinion and are accordingly planning the next action. As per a report by Deccan Herald, on May 29, 2025, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), said that it will not allow Kamal’s Thug Life to be released unless the actor issues a public apology by May 30, 2025. KFCC president, M Narasimhalu, said that many Kannada groups had demanded a ban on the actor’s movie, Thug Life, and after the discussion, they have decided that Kamal should apologise. He also said that what the Tamil star said was completely wrong and they are planning to meet and talk with Kamal.
Taking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Kamal Haasan refused to apologise for the matter he said ‘out of love’. He also explained the language history and stated Tamil Nadu is a place where a person can share anything openly. Sharing his views on the ongoing controversy, Kamal said:
