Justin Trudeau is once again making headlines, this time not over his political career but for being linked to pop star, Katy Perry. The two were recently spotted having dinner in Montreal after Justin attended her concert, sparking speculation about a possible romance. Whether there’s any truth to these rumours is yet to be confirmed. However, the last time Justin had made headlines over his relationship status was when he announced his divorce from his ex-wife, Sophie Gregoire. The two shared what many would call a perfect on-paper wedding, and their divorce announcement in 2023 shocked the world. But was it really that shocking? Many might like to argue that there were signs hinting at trouble in paradise long before the divorce was even spoken about.
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire reportedly first met when they were still children in Montreal, and long after reconnected as adults in 2003 when Sophie was working as a TV host and co-hosted a charity event with Justin. Their connection quickly turned romantic, and they were engaged within a year. The ex-couple got married on May 28, 2005, in a beautiful ceremony at Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church in Montreal. Over the years, they became one of Canada’s most high-profile couples, often appearing together at official events and in the media. However, after 18 years of marriage, they announced their separation on August 2, 2023.
Though the news of Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire's divorce came as a surprise to many, throughout their marriage, whispers of extramarital affairs followed both of them constantly. The most persistent one was with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Melanie Joly, with whom Justin had a notably close working relationship. While both denied any affair, speculation intensified after Justin Trudeau's July 2023 cabinet shuffle left Melanie untouched. This fueled theories that their personal relationship had influenced this professional decision.
If Justin was surrounded by infidelity rumours, Sophie was no less. As reported by The List, in March 2020, Sophie Gregoire tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after attending a charity event in London. Around the same time, British actor, Idris Elba also announced that he had contracted the virus, he stated in a video that he had been exposed to someone who had tested positive. Since both had attended the same event, speculation quickly grew online that the two were romantically involved. While there was no evidence to support the claim, Idris’s vague wording and the timing of their diagnoses fueled persistent rumours of an affair.
Sophie and Justin had never directly addressed any rumours of cheating in their relationship. When asked directly about whether the marriage had survived infidelity, Sophie refused to give a clear answer. She said that hardship was part of pursuing ‘authenticity’ and ‘truth’ in a relationship and she was glad that they went throught it. The ambiguity in her response, neither confirming nor denying rumours, only deepened public curiosity about what truly unfolded behind closed doors.

As Justin’s political career began to reach its peak, the demands of leadership clashed with his family life. He often worked from Ottawa while Sophie and their children remained in Montreal. The geographical and emotional distance reportedly placed increasing pressure on their relationship. Justin himself admitted to CBC in 2014 that his marriage had time and again suffered because of his ‘very difficult, high-pressured job’ as an elected leader of Canada's Liberal Party.
In the months leading up to their split, Sophie had posted introspective messages that hinted at deeper personal struggles. On Canada Day 2023, she wrote that ‘Life is tough, everyone has their troubles,’ many now have interpreted this as a reference to her deteriorating marriage with Justin. Despite her Father’s Day 2023 tribute to Justin in June, their emotional distance was becoming visible online.
Their separation statement mentioned that the couple had ‘many meaningful and difficult conversations,’ which led to their separation. The statement alone hinted that the decision was long awaited. Soon after they announced their split, Sophie began dating Ottawa pediatric surgeon, Dr. Marcos Bettolli. Their marriage may have appeared ‘fairytale-like’ on the surface, but it was far more complicated behind the scenes. With political pressures, emotional distance, and unanswered questions about fidelity, the signs of it falling apart were always there.
