Recently, a video has gone massively viral on social media, which showed an orca killing a lady, who was identified as Jessica Radcliffe, a SeaWorld trainer. The video sparked a sense of worry among people, leaving them wondering what might have happened to the lady, given the horrific scenes shown in the clip. Later, it was revealed that the clip was morphed, and it was only created with the intention of gaining viewership. Amid this, let's know about Tilikum, a male orca who was responsible for killing at least three people.
Male orca, Tilikum, who was also known by the nickname Tilly, was infamous, as his life in captivity had sparked debates over ethics and marine mammals being used for entertainment. Orcas are wild, highly intelligent, and social animals that thrive in complex family dynamics in the ocean. When kept separated and captive, they can act differently and become dangerous due to the natural separation, performance pressure, and stressful conditions.
Talking about Tilikum, he became famous because he was responsible for taking the lives of three people. His life was broadly shown in the 2013 documentary, Blackfish, and it ignited debates and discussions all around about the psychological and physical toll that the orcas have to face due to being captivated. Tilikum was captured in 1983, when he was just two years old. After being found near Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean, Tilikum was first kept in the marine park, Sealand of the Pacific. Later, he was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando in Florida in 1992, where he stayed till his death in 2017.
Tilikum was responsible for the death of three people in his lifetime, and these incidents had earlier grabbed a great deal of attention, given nobody knew why suddenly the whale acted in such a manner, which raised the discussion about the psychological toll on the mammals being captivated. The first death was of Keltie Byrne, who was a trainer in Tilikum's previous home, SeaLand. It was in 1991 when the incident took place that caused Katie's death. The eyewitnesses back then revealed that there were a total of three orcas present in the pool when Katie died, but it was widely believed that Tilikum was the one to drag her down. Later, investigation proved that her death took place due to being held forcefully under water and being drowned by an orca.
The second death case that involved Tilikum was that of Daniel Dukes. The incident took place back in 1999, when Daniel, a public member, sneaked into SeaWorld Orlando, and reportedly climbed into the orca's pool. If the reports are to be believed, Daniel's body was found the next morning, and investigations suggested that Daniel's body showed the signs of injuries caused by the whale.

The most infamous incident was the demise of Dawn Brancheau back in 2010, which involved Tilikum. Several information about this incident surfaced, which claimed that Dawn, an experienced trainer at SeaWorld Orlando, was feeding fish to Tilly during the show, Dine with Shamu. She was rubbing the orca's head when he dragged her into the water either by her hair or her shoulder. As this tragic and horrifying incident happened during the show, it grabbed a whole lot of attention and media coverage. Tillikum released Brancheau's body after 45 minutes, but it was too late.
The autopsy result revealed that her left arm and scalp were torn off, while her left knee had been dislocated. She, as per the report, died from drowning and blunt force trauma, and her spinal cord was also severed along with fractures in the jawbone, ribs, and a cervical vertebra. Such an incident was widely circulated, with people being confused about Tillikum's sudden attack. On Reddit, a thread was created discussing Tillikum's confused state following the incident.
Tilikum died on January 6, 2017, and it was caused by a prolonged bacterial lung infection, from which he reportedly was suffering for a long time. Despite medical aid, the infection kept getting worse and it finally claimed his life. During his lifetime, he sired 21 calves, and his first kid was born in 1991. Several of his offspring are in several marine parks as of now, but a lot of them have died as well due to the circumstances.
Recently, a video showed an individual named Jessica Radcliffe being dragged by an orca. The video caused an uproar again about the captive lives of the orcas, as it triggered the past memories. However, later, it was revealed that the video was morphed and was created with AI-generated visuals, along with old clips and generated screaming sounds. Along with all these, some manipulated captions left people wondering if this incident actually took place. Later, it was proved that this video was fake and clickbait, with no iota of truth in it.
