Jennifer Tilly And Phil Laak's Love Story, Met At A Poker Tournament, Together For 20 Years

Jennifer Tilly rose from playing minor roles in films to becoming a pop-culture icon with the Child's Play franchise. She has also managed to stay in the limelight for years with her appearance in the fan-favourite show, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. However, apart from being a well-loved actress, Jennifer is also a popular poker player. And interestingly, the actress's love story with her boyfriend, Phil Laak, also started through a game of poker. Here's everything to know about their sweet relationship. 

Jennifer Tilly and Phil Laak met at a poker event 

Phil Laak is an Irish-American poker player who holds a number of titles and also holds the Guinness World Record for playing the longest poker marathon. Phil's signature attire of dark sunglasses and a hoodie has earned him the title of the 'Unabomber'. Meanwhile, Jennifer has been called the 'Unabombshell' after being in a relationship with Phil for so long. Interestingly, the poker world's 'Unabomber' and his 'Unabomshell' met at a poker event and fell in love. 

Jennifer Tilly and Phil Laak met at the 2004 World Poker Tour Invitational at Los Angeles’ Commerce Casino, which the latter ended up winning. The actress, who was more interested in the game than acting, asked Phil to teach her how to play poker like him, reported Upswing Poker. At this, Phil replied to her that he would teach her if Jennifer, in return, taught him how to accessorise. The actress then asked for his number but did not call. Hence, the next time they met, Phil made sure to get her number as well, and as they say, "The rest is history". 

When Jennifer Tilly revealed that Phil Laak is her type

Earlier in an episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Jennifer Tilly opened up to the other women of the show and the viewers about the special man in her life. Jennifer said that she has been with Phil for 20 years and also stated that he is her type. Talking about her partner, Jennifer shared:

"I've been with my man for 20 years. I would say he's my type. He's a poker player. He just sort of likes to shuffle around in his pajamas and mutter about, you know, things going on in the world. Yeah, he's the best. Shuffles around in his pajamas and talks about cryptocurrency — that's my man."

In the same episode, while everyone discussed their type in men, Jennifer also revealed what she prefers in a partner. The actress said that she likes 'out-of-shape comedians' and isn't 'super into abs'. Jennifer also mentioned that she likes people who are intelligent and smart. Interestingly, Phil Laak is known for his intellect. Before going pro with poker, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. And apart from poker, Phil is also well versed with other games such as backgammon, chess and hearts. Talking about her type, Jennifer said:

"I like comedians. I like sort of squishy, out-of-shape comedians. I like people who are ferociously intelligent; I'm not super into abs, you know, I don't care if people have a six pack or an eight pack. But I like people that are really smart and sort of think outside the box."

Jennifer Tilly was previously married to Sam Simon, the creator of The Simpsons 

Before getting in a relationship with Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly's previous public relationship was with Sam Simon, the creator of The Simpsons. The two were even married for seven years before getting a divorce in 1991. In Season 14 of RHOBH, Jennifer discussed her divorce, revealing that she received one-third of The Simpsons' earnings as part of the settlement. Apart from that, Jennifer also shared she had gotten close to Sam after their divorce and called him her best friend. She also cared for him during his last days while suffering from colon cancer. Jennifer shared about her ex-husband:

"We were very close after we got divorced. He was probably my best friend for 30 years. It seemed weird, once I wasn't saddled with being a wife and all the expectations that came along with being a wife, then it seemed like it liberated us to be really close. Because we were there because we wanted to be there. I knew that he loved me, but I don't remember him ever saying it until he was sick. In the last years of his life and I was taking care of him, then he said it all the time to me."
