Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known among cinephiles for his grand sets, soulful music and poignant love stories. The first movie that gave this image to the director was his magnum opus, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Released in 1999, the film starred Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai as the leads, and Ajay Devgn in a pivotal role. However, at a preview screening of the film, Jaya Bachchan's sombre reaction gave Bhansali the impression that the veteran actress hated the film featuring Salman and Aishwarya, her future daughter-in-law.
In an older interview with Star Talk, Sanjay Leela Bhansali opened up about the international acclaim that his 1999 film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, received at the Berlin Film Festival. The director gave the credit to three people. One of them was the veteran actress, Jaya Bachchan. However, Bhansali also recalled a misunderstanding on his part where he thought that Jaya hated the film. After a special screening of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, many of the viewers came and heaped praises on him. Except for Jaya Bachchan.
The director revealed that after she watched the Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan starrer film, Jaya smiled at him and then quietly walked past without any words. The veteran actress's silence led Bhansali to believe the film was probably not to her liking. However, Jaya one day called him and cleared the misunderstanding. Rather than hating the film, Jaya Bachchan loved Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam so much that she recommended it for the Berlin Film Festival and made sure that it reached the international platform. Talking about this incident, the director said:
"And there was Jaya Bachchan, who recommended the film very strongly to Berlin. She came and saw the film, and the day she saw the film, she came out, smiled at me, and left. And then she called me one day and said, ‘You thought I hated the film, but my way of saying that I like the film was to recommend it to Berlin and see to it that it goes over there'."
After being hailed for the exceptional acting of the highly acclaimed starcast and the masterful direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam made its way to the esteemed platform of the Berlin Film Festival. After receiving recognition, the film was sent to even more international film festivals around the world. Apart from Jaya Bachchan, Bhansali gave credit to two more people who made it possible for the film to reach international acclaim. In the same interview, he said:
“It was wonderful that it was selected in Berlin, it is now gone to every festival. There were two people responsible for it. One was Dorothy who came here from Berlin to select a film and a taxi driver said, ‘Memsahab aap ye picture dekho humare saath'."
After gaining widespread recognition for his craft, Sanjay Leela Bhansali went on to create a niche of films that are entirely unique to his storytelling style. His films, such as Devdas, Black, and Bajirao Mastani, among others, have become cult classics. On the work front, Bhansali's last creative endeavour was the Netflix series Heeramandi. Currently, the filmmaker is reported to be working on the film, Love and War, featuring Vicky Kaushal, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
