A shocking incident of theft has taken the Indian sports industry by storm. The Indian Premier League 2025 is back in the headlines due to a sensational heist, not of money, but of sports jerseys worth lakhs. The shocking incident comes from the prestigious Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. After the mysterious disappearance of 261 official IPL jerseys worth Rs. 6.5 lakh from the BCCI office in June 2025, the police traced the theft to a security officer who allegedly sold the merchandise to fund his gambling expenses.
IPL 2025 wrapped up on June 4, 2025, marking the historic win of the Royal Challengers Bangalore after 18 years since its first IPL match. While the whole country was celebrating the record-breaking moment, only days after the incident, an insider was busy sneaking away expensive team merchandise, right from the prestigious BCCI office.
According to reports, the crime took place on June 13, 2025, but it came to light days later, after a stock audit revealed missing inventory. When BCCI officials reviewed CCTV footage, they found the perpetrator to be a 46-year-old security guard of the stadium, Farooque Aslam Khan, exiting the premises with a box full of jerseys. Each of the jerseys was priced around Rs. 2,500, belonging to teams like the Mumbai Indians, RCB, CSK, and more. A formal complaint was filed with the Mumbai Police on June 17, 2025.
Police revealed that the security guard is a gambling addict and stole the jerseys to fund his gambling expenses. Khan allegedly contacted an online jersey dealer from Haryana via social media under the pretence that the inventory was being cleared out for renovation. The security guard couriered the stolen loot without suspicion and received payment directly into his bank account.
Farooque Aslam Khan reportedly funded his online betting with the money, but now, he claims that he has lost all the money. Investigators are currently looking into the accused’s bank records and transaction history to verify his claims. Zee News quoted a police official’s statement:

“We are investigating whether the dealer had any prior knowledge about the stolen nature of the goods. So far, we’re verifying the guard’s claim that he lost the money from the sale to gambling.”
Out of the 261 jerseys stolen, about 50 jerseys have been recovered so far, and the remaining stock is still missing. When questioned, the Haryana-based buyer claimed ignorance, stating he was unaware the jerseys were stolen. The dealer has now been summoned for further questioning.
As of now, the Marine Drive Police have registered an FIR under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Before this, BCCI employee Hemang Amin had filed a formal complaint on June 17, 2025, for a full-blown investigation into the incident.
The shocking jersey heist, that too, from a protected area like the BCCI office, has raised eyebrows over internal checks at one of the country’s most secure sporting institutions. The police are now examining CCTV evidence, financial transactions, and all digital communication records to get to the root of the matter.
