Imran Khan has been one of the most admired actors in Bollywood. Despite his short stint in the industry, he gained a lot of success through his films and later stepped away from the limelight after 2015. As he is back in action, Imran shared in different interviews that he was dealing with difficult personal issues and severe depression during his break. For the unversed, Imran is the nephew of Aamir Khan, who gave him his debut film. In a new interview, Imran shared how he began having conversations with his uncle, Aamir Khan, about mental health in recent years.
Recently, Imran Khan sat down for an interview with News18 Showsha and discussed at length about his mental health issues and having conversations about it in his family. The actor said he initially didn't discuss his mental health struggles with his family or uncle, Aamir Khan. However, the situation began to change when Aamir Khan's daughter, Ira Khan, suffered from depression and later began a community organisation focused on mental health. For the unversed, during his appearance on Nikhil Taneja's Be A Man Yaar season 2, Imran revealed he had anxiety attacks and felt suicidal, which led him to seek therapy.
Imran Khan added in his interview that with time, he began conversing about mental health with Aamir Khan. At the same time, the topic has become a normal issue of discussion in his family. Moreover, he mentioned that they all try to support each other in their mental health journeys. He was quoted as saying:
"In the past couple of years, at various points, we've sat down. With Ira starting to really advocate for mental health awareness in the past year and me beginning to emerge back into the public eye and speak about my journey, the joke around home is that we now get together and finally talk about mental well-being, consciousness, and healthy patterns. It's now a thing. In our family, we're trying to support each other in our mental health journeys."
A few days ago, Aamir Khan appeared on the second episode of Rhea Chakraborty's podcast, Chapter 2. During his chat, the actor revealed he had much time to think and introspect about his life during lockdown. At that time, he realised how he had been engrossed in his work for the past three decades and missed out on his family life and his kid's childhood. In his words:
"This incident caused a mental breakdown. I had a proper mental breakdown. I went through solid pain. I was distressed. I was broken by the time I had my first realisation. The realisation that when my kids were young—when Ira was three years old, eight years old, 12 years old—I was never there for them. I wasn't totally absent like I would spend time with them like any normal working father, but even though I was with them and with my mother, I was mentally never present with them."
Aamir went on to add that he had a mental breakdown when the realisations hit him, and he began to seek therapy to deal with the situation. As a result, therapy helped him deal with the dilemma he faced after he realised how he wasn't often there for his family and kids.
